Ever since the world met with the news of the demise of Khabib’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the MMA world has been speculating if Khabib Nurmagomedov will call retirement from the sport. Khabib, who was very close with his father has often cited him as the inspiration and strength to behind his exceptional achievements inside the octagon. Khabib Nurmagomedov remains undefeated inside the octagon, and was rumored to return in September to face Justin Gaethje for the UFC Lightweight championship. However, UFC’s recent announcement regarding UFC 253 has put more doubts in the head of MMA fans. UFC official announced Israel Adesanya vs Paulo Costa for the UFC 253 card, and it remains to be seen if there’s another title stored for the same evening. Nevertheless, as of now, there has been no confirmation regarding Khabib Nurmagomedov’s return to the octagon.
Khabib Nurmagomedov to face Justin Gaethje in 2020
Earlier, in a media interaction, UFC President Dana White stated that he has not contacted Khabib Numragoemdov ever since his father’s demise. However, he remains confident that Khabib will return to the octagon, and his scheduled bout with Justin Gaethje will take place as per the plan.
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Manager Ali Abdelaziz provided an update regarding the Dagestani fighter‘s status. He believes that Nurmagomedov will return to action before the end of this year.
“Khabib is not retiring,” Abdelaziz continued. “Khabib has some goals, he has some things he wants to accomplish. You will see him before the end of the year. Now him and Dana (are) talking and me talking to the matchmakers and we’ll try to set a date. I’m sure Dana is gonna let everybody know when Khabib is gonna fight.”
Justin Gaethje put up an impressive performance against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 to win the interim lightweight championship. He defeated Ferguson via 5th round TKO, and will face Khabib next for the unification title match.
