Brooklyn Nets are apparently preparing a ‘Godfather’ to legendary San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. The Nets have been working towards the creation of a perfect team around their newly acquired superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Meanwhile, the Nets parted ways with their head coach Kenny Atkinson in March 2020. Several names have come up in this discussion of finding the perfect head coach for the Nets.

On the recent edition of the “Let’s Get Technical, With Bonzi and Sheed”, a podcast hosted by Former NBA stars Rasheed Wallace and Bonzi Wells, along with Gerald Brown. Amin Elhassan was the guest as they discussed the story.
“There’s a story going around that the owner of the Brooklyn Nets is looking to make a ‘Godfather offer’ to Gregg Popovich, and when I say the Godfather, I mean ‘something he can’t refuse,’” Brown said.
The rumour has some sense as Sean Mark, Nets GM has spent a chunk of his NBA career as player, executive and coach under Gregg Popovich. He has been openly praising the Spurs culture cultivated by Popovich and wouldn’t mind doing the same in Brooklyn.
Is Gregg Popovich the right choice?
Gregg Popovich has more wins under his belt than any other coach in the history of the NBA. He has taken the Spurs to the playoffs for 22 years straight and has won 5 championships in the process. He is considered one of the greatest coaches of all time. Journalist Stephen A Smith believes under Popovich, the superstar duo of KD and Kyrie could either win it all or leave Brooklyn altogether.
Popovich has the potential to take the Nets to the promised land. But the question of him leaving the Spurs after 24 years of service still stands. Age is also a very important factor in this conversation as he 71 now and no one knows how long will he continue to coach.
