Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is all set to make his return to the ring this weekend. The 59-2-2 pugilist will take on another undisputed champion Jermell Charlo to headline an event fans cannot wait to witness.
After his win over John Ryder on Mexican soil, Alvarez wanted to opt for a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The Russian fighter happened to end Canelo’s 10-year winning streak and Alvarez wanted to make sure he settled the score. However, the fight failed to materialize and several fighters later the 33-year-old veteran finalized a fight with Jermell Charlo.
Originally ‘Saul’ was supposed to fight Jermell’s twin Jermall who fights in the middleweight division. However, due to some personal reasons, Jermall stepped down making way for his twin. While Charlo also happens to be an undisputed champion he fights two weight classes below in the light middleweight division.
This means Jermell will have to put on a decent amount of weight to lock horns with the Mexican.
Regardless, Charlo and his trainer do not seem to be worried about it. The 33-year-old fighter is more focused on retaining speed and might even step on the scales slightly underweight.
The main card also features a light middleweight bout between Jesus Ramos and Erickson Lubin. Ramos is a young and budding fighter with an undefeated record ready to make a name for himself. That said his opponent Lubin is no joke either and has fought for the WBC super welterweight title in the past.
The card also features a fight between former champions Marios Barrios and Yordenis Ugas. Both fighters have fought some big names throughout their career and will contest for the WBC vacant interim Welterweight title.
Walk-out songs for Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo
The undisputed Mexican champion is mostly known for using Mexican songs with a patriotic feel to it. In his last fight against John Ryder, the 33-year-old gave fans one of the most epic walkouts to date. Canelo had a 150-member band playing mariachi music for him as he walked to the ring donning a crown.
Continuing the Mexican theme Alvarez also walked out to México Lindo Y Querido by Vicente Fernández in his second fight against GGG. He also used the Mexican Anthem and Medley by Pepe, Leonardo and Ángela Aguilar for his fight against Billy Joe Saunders.
Apart from walking out to patriotic Mexican music, Alvarez has also experimented in a grand way. For his title defense against Avni Yildirim, Alvarez walked out to the chartbuster Mi Gente as Columbian star J Balvin performed for him.
Meanwhile his opponent Jermell Charlo during his fight for the undisputed title against Brian Castano walked to ‘Let the Groove Get In’ by Justin Timberlake. Charlo became the undisputed champion via a stoppage and went on to fight Castano again.
For his second fight and first undisputed title defense against Castano Charlo walked out to What a Time by Lil Brent. The fight saw the same result as Charlo won via a knockout in round 10 to retain his title.
What are the walk-out songs for other main card fighters?
Columbian boxer Yordenis Ugas will also feature on the main card fighting for the vacant WBC interim world welterweight title. Ugas is coming off from a loss against Errol Spence Jr. where he lost via TKO in the 10th round. In this particular match, Ugas walked to Patria Y Vida by Youtel, Gente de Zona, Decemer Bueno, Maykel Osorbo and El Funky.
The song defines the Cuban uprising while packing plenty of historical references. Using this song for his entrance was the Colombian boxer’s way of showing his support for the movement. He also used the same song for his fight against the legend Manny Pacquiao and got the job done by winning via a unanimous decision in 2021.
Meanwhile, his opponent Mario Barrios channels his Mexican roots and uses them as motivation for his fight. The 28-year-old fighter’s walkouts follow a theme where he makes his entrance to his traditional native music. No catchy music or star performing beside him, only a bunch of performers playing different instruments.
Although Barrios lost two of his last three fights he impressed everyone with his entrance and his solid performance. Which song do you like the most? Tell us in the comments below.
