Deontay Wilder

Deontay Wilder is highly infamous for the excuses he gave after losing his first professional fight. The American professional boxer has held the WBC heavyweight title for five years from 2015 to 2020. During this time he successfully defended his title ten times. But in February 2020, Wilder finally was dethroned from his champion position by Tyson Fury.

It was the second time Wilder and Fury went against each other since their first bout in 2018 ended in a controversial draw. In the rematch Fury dominated Wilder from the opening round and outboxed him in every department. Wilder lost the fight and his titles by a seventh-round stoppage. Following his embarrassing defeat, Wilder came forward with a series of excuses that according to him were the reasons why he lost. Let’s have a look at some of the craziest excuses Wilder gave.

Wilder had an Injured arm muscle:

The most classic excuse that Wilder gave was that he suffered an injury during his training before the fight. It is common for boxers to get an injury during their training and then they try to endure it through the actual fight.

This might not be a significant thing if they win the fight but when they lose, they can always blame the injury that held them back during the fight. For Wilder, it was his injured bicep that he got during sparring affected his overall performance while facing Fury.

Deontay Wilder accused the referee of favoring the opponent:

One of the outrageous excuses that Wilder gave is that the referee in the bout was favoring Fury. According to Wilder, referee Kenny Bayless let Fury get away with cheating on many occasions.

Wilder revealed Bayless warned him not to hit Fury in the back of the head or else he would disqualify Wilder. But when Fury did the same he got away with it.

In an interview with The Athletic, Wilder said ” I guess those rules just applied to me because they didn’t apply to my opponent“.

“My Water was spiked”

Adding one to the most bizarre excuses you can think of, Wilder ranted about how the water he drank during the fight was not normal. According to Wilder, Mark Breland, who was his coach, was handling his water and he might have planted some conspiracy to defeat Wilder.

In an interview with 78 sports TV, Wilder said ” My water tampered. I had no control over my body and my legs were weak“.

Wilder complained about the excessive weight of the entrancing costume:

The list of the crazy excuses that Wilder gave continues with one of the funniest you can imagine.

After getting badly defeated by Fury, Wilder opened up to the media about his side of the story. It was then when Wilder came out with an excuse that he suffered the maximum damage not from his opponent but from his costume that we wore during this walk-in.

Wilder wore a glamorous suit tribute to Black History Month. According to Wilder, it was the first time he tried that costume and it weighed around 40 pounds which was too much for him to carry around.

Deontay Wilder accused Tyson Fury of cheating with his gloves:

Wilder put forward any form of conspiracy he could think of to prove his point. One of them was that Fury’s gloves were tampered with, it is as ridiculous as it sounds.

According to Wilder, Fury cheated and put something in his gloves that hurt Wilder during the fight. Wilder accused Fury that he put something the size and shape of egg weight. That was the reason he gave why his left eye swelled in that way.
