The UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley recently defeated one of the division’s most dominant fighters, Aljamain Sterling, to win the title. In terms of his choices for the future in the combat sports world, Sean O’Malley is considering facing Gervonta Davis.
Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been outspoken in the recent past about his opinion that, as a result of his sensational victory over another pay-per-view hero, Ryan Garcia, he is the new face of boxing.
His statement was probably targeted at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the former pound-for-pound number one, who is seeing a steady deterioration according to some. Even though Canelo just outperformed Jermell Charlo, “Tank” has now backed up his claims.

In response to a fan who claimed on social media that Davis was a “nobody” outside of the lightweight category, ‘Tank’ wrote, “This boxing sh*t mine buddy..f*ck a weight class, I am the face”. So, the boxer maintains that he is the biggest name in boxing currently, even after Alvarez made easy work of Iron Man to retain his status as undisputed champion.
However, ‘Sugar’ is not ready to agree to any of this, as he recently replied to Davis, “You are 5 feet, 3 inches; settle down.” This is not the first time O’Malley has talked about Davis, as he recently mentioned in an interview with UFC legend Michael Bisping that he plans to call out ‘Tank’ for a crossover fight after his potential rematch with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. However, O’Malley added that he does not feel that Davis is that big of a boxing star yet.
Gervonta Davis’ coach claims that ‘Tank’ will finish Sean O’Malley in one round
While Sean O’Malley feels that Gervonta Davis is not there yet when it comes to stardom as a boxer, Davis’ coach has claimed that the UFC champion is just a matter of one round for the lightweight boxer. Kenny Ellis, one of Davis’ trainers, thinks O’Malley would embarrass himself in a boxing battle. “Tank is going to whoop his ass in the first round,” said Ellis.
He further said that not just Gervonta but any lightweight would find it easy to beat the UFC champion in a boxing match.
Boxing and MMA crossover fights have become highly popular in the recent past, and why wouldn’t they be? They bring together the stars of the two worlds, and fans love it. Moreover, fighters also don’t mind the big pay check from the fight, which sometimes exceeds their entire career earnings.
A case in point would be former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, who is set to face Tyson Fury this month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia which would be the biggest payday in his career.
However, these fights have attracted a lot of criticism from traditionalists, who believe that they deteriorate the sport. What do you make of crossover fights between MMA fighters and boxers? Tell us in the comments!
