Following his loss to Gervonta Davis on Saturday night, Ryan Garcia has been subject to a lot of criticism. Despite talking a good game, many felt that Garcia was unable to back it up in the ring. Interestingly, some have also suggested that Garcia is a quitter.
Coming into the fight against Davis, “King Ry” was clearly the underdog. Whilst Tank was more experienced, he had also shown more grit and maturity. Thus, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Garcia. Additionally, news of a mole in his training camp likely did not help things either. Yet, Garcia seemed determined and indulged in a fair bit of trash talk ahead of the fight.
As for the fight itself, Garcia fell short of everyone’s expectations. Having won only Rounds 1 and 6 in the fight that lasted 7 Rounds, Ryan’s performance left much to be desired. Even the rounds Garcia did win were purely due to him being the more active fighter. According to experts and commentators, Garcia played right into Davis’ traps and could not recover from them.
For the most part, “Tank” was very reserved and waited for any openings to pounce on and deliver big shots to Ryan. As such, the first chance he got, Davis countered Ryan with a huge left and knocked him down in Round 2. Then, in Round 7, Davis delivered a brutal shot to the liver of Garcia, who had to take a knee and could not get up before the referee’s count. Whilst it did not seem to be that dangerous, a new angle has shown exactly how badly Garcia suffered from the body shot.
Andy Ruiz thinks that Ryan Garcia quit during his fight
As with any massive PPV fight, there was naturally a lot of talk after this one as well. Seemingly everyone wanted to share their thoughts on the fight and bash Garcia for losing. Although he lost, the work he has put in until now and even stepping into the ring against Gervonta Davis is a commendable feat in and of itself. Thus, many have also come out in support of the 24-year-old.
Notably, big names like Andrew Tate and Conor McGregor also shared their support for the young fighter. Additionally, the Top G slammed people hating on Garcia as well. However, one of Garcia’s biggest critics happens to be none other than Andy Ruiz. According to the heavyweight, his fellow Mexican should have taken more risks and given Davis something to think about.
Speaking to FightHype.com, Ruiz says, “Man, Gervonta did what he had to do”. Further, Count Ruiz adds, “He won the fight, but I was going for Ryan, but he gave up, man. I felt like he gave up. I feel like he should have did what he has to do to win the fight. When we get [knocked] down, we got to get back up.”
Thus, despite rooting for Garcia, Andy Ruiz believes that the young fighter gave up. Whilst Ruiz felt as though Ryan Garcia should have taken more risks, it is likely that his coach Joe Goossen would have advised against it. Even prior to the KO, Garcia was bleeding a lot. However, Garcia has since vowed to work harder and come back stronger in the future. As for Ruiz, he is currently in talks to challenge Tyson Fury for his WBC heavyweight title.
