You heard it here first! The much-awaited showdown between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. has been promoted as Tyson’s return to the boxing ring. The former undisputed champion of the world is arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time. However, amidst all the drama and the hype that Tyson brings with his name, many are overlooking an incredible athlete in the form of Roy Jones Jr.
The former four-division champion of the world Roy Jones Jr. is a boxer who was a class apart during his prime. He is the first boxer in the history of boxing who went all the way to the heavyweight division after becoming a middleweight champion to earn gold at the heavyweight. In the process, he became the first boxer in the 106 years of boxing history.
Jones Jr. was known for his quickness, his elusive movement, and his brilliant footwork that made him one of the greatest of all time. Nobody could have envisaged the kind of heights that Roy Jones Jr. achieved during his time as a boxer. Having said that, it’s equally surprising to know that he fought till his late 40’s, with his last bout coming just two years ago, in 2018 in a winning affair.
Roy Jones Jr. can beat Mike Tyson
Roy Jones Jr. is 51. While age is not going to give an edge to any fighter considering both are over 50, Jones’ activity certainly gives him an edge. Roy Jones Jr. has been quite active, considering he last stepped inside the boxing ring in an eight-round bout just back in 2018.
While it will mark two years for Jones Jr., it is after almost 15 years that Tyson will step inside the boxing ring. While it’s a different thing to look good in sparring sessions, stepping inside the boxing ring is a completely different game. Needless to say, Jones Jr. has the edge there and will look to shut the critics and the fans who have only promoted Mike Tyson ahead of the hugely anticipated exhibition bout scheduled to take place inside Staples Center this weekend.
