Gervonta “Tank” Davis remains unbeaten (29-0) as he defeats Ryan Garcia (23-1) via 7th-round TKO! The two undefeated superstars clashed inside the T-Mobile Arena at a catchweight of 136 lbs. During the lead-up to the fight, there was a lot of animosity between the two and it was evident during the fight. Garcia started off in an explosive manner and pushed Tank’s buttons.
However, many thought Tank’s power would be the defining factor ahead of the bout and that ended up being the case. In the second round, Ryan pushed the pace and became reckless in his approach. But one overhead punch from Davis sat Ryan down momentarily. King Ryan’s output decreased significantly as a result until round 7. Sensing that he was down in the scorecards, the Mexican-American fighter threw caution to the wind and started to let his hands go.
However, Gervonta landed the perfect body shot which ended the bout. While Ryan was backing up into a corner, Davis landed a left hook that landed on Garcia’s liver and made the 24-year-old take a knee. As combat sports fans know, a liver shot is potentially a fight-ending blow as it shuts down the body. Hence, Ryan could not recover from the strike and suffered the first defeat of his career.
After the contest, Ryan spoke about the ending sequence. During his post-fight interview, Garcia gave Gervonta a lot of credit. He also seemingly buried the hatchet with the Floyd Mayweather protege. Garcia added that he could not breathe after the body shot from the Baltimore native. Ryan added, “He caught me with a good body shot and I just couldn’t recover. I couldn’t breathe. I just couldn’t get up.” (h/t via Michael Benson)
Gervonta Davis is now 29-0 and will target a bout against the undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney. Previously, his former promoter Floyd Mayweather called him the future face of boxing. So the question is, does Davis feel like he did enough to live up to that after his stunning win over Garcia? In his post-fight interview, he recalled Floyd’s words and said, “Abso-f**king-lutely.”
