2021 was a great year for All Elite Wrestling. They signed the likes of Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole and also the heart of this conversation, Christian Cage. He made a name for himself in WWE. Early last year, Cage made his AEW debut. Since then he has been wrestling non-stop. Cage has also said that he will end his career in AEW.
A short history of Christian’s career
Christian was born in Toronto, Canada as William Jason Reso. He and Edge were childhood friends. From the age of fifteen, Christian wanted to become a professional wrestler. In 1994, at the age of 21, Christian joined a wrestling school. 4 years later, Christian signed with WWE. He is one of the few people to win a title in his debut match. In fact, in WWE he is the first person to do so. It was the Light Heavyweight title, Christian defeated Taka Michinoku to win the title. Christian joined the faction called ‘Brood‘ along with Edge and Gangrel.
Edge and Christian along with the Hardy Boys and the Dudleys revolutionised tag team wrestling. Christian has won the tag team titles with Edge 7 times, with Lance Storm once and also once with Chris Jericho. Christian is a GrandSlam champion in WWE. Christian wanted to up his game and so joined the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), where he became a 2-time ECW Champion. Even when Christian left WWE and moved to the independent circuit, Christian was on top. Christian has also won championships in NJPW and TNA.
Due to several concussions, Christian was forced to retire. After retirement, Christian joined the pre-show panel of NXT Takeovers and occasionally on the pre-show of WWE PPVs. After not wrestling for 7 years, last year at the Royal Rumble, Christian shocked the world by being an entrant at the men’s Royal Rumble match. Then Christian signed with AEW and has been wrestling for them since.
Why would Christian stay at AEW?
Recently Christian tweeted out saying that he will stay in AEW until he retires. Since his AEW debut, Christian quickly took the Impact World Championship from Kenny Omega. He held the title for a short period of time until he lost it Impact’s Bound for Glory. Getting to hold a title within months of entering AEW is not the reason why Christian wants to stay in AEW forever. The amount of creative freedom he has within AEW plays a major role.
For any wrestler, they would love to have a lot of freedom to perform during their matches. AEW is one of the few companies that are willing to provide that freedom. Besides that, superstars also are provided a lot of TV time and have. detailed story-telling in building their feuds. These are the reasons why Christian Cage wants to stay with AEW.
1 yr ago today I took my career back. Man, 2021 was wild, I was involved in 3 PPV main events for 3 different companies & had some special moments. That being said, @AEW is my home for the rest of my career. So what do I want in 2022? The world, Chico, and everything in it. pic.twitter.com/dKX8SeXrpb
