In an unlikely turn of events, which might have a lot to do with Covington’s rivalry with Dustin Poirier, the former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington came out in support of the Notorious as he called out Poirier for celebrating his “fluke” win at UFC 264.
Covington called out Dustin Poirier for his apparent reaction soon after Conor McGregor broke his leg in the closing moments of the first round, which led to a Doctor’s stoppage win for Poirier in the trilogy bout inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“He’s out there strutting in front of Conor’s face. Obviously, it was a fluke, man. Conor broke his leg. It was a fluke ending. It wasn’t a knockout, it wasn’t a clear-cut decision, it wasn’t a submission. And the guy’s out there strutting in front of the guy’s face at a downfall when that guy made his career and did everything for Dustin to give him this big fight.”
Unlike several of the UFC fighters, Colby Covington did not take the chance to ridicule Conor McGregor but rather trashed Dustin Poirier for his reaction in the aftermath of UFC 264. Covington has never been a fan of Poirier, and the former teammates have gone back and forth on social media several times.
Colby Covington says Dustin Poirier showed his “true colors” at UFC 264
In the past, Covington has claimed that Dustin Poirier is using the charity the Good Fight Foundation to evade taxes, and recently said that he uses his wife Jolie Poirier as a prop to cover his own character.
“He only uses her for a prop because he knows he’s a piece of sh*t person and he wants to act like he’s a nice guy, a family man, a father, and a good husband. So I just thought it showed his true character last night. He’s a dirtbag and so is the whole camp that he resides out of.”
The rivalry between Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier is well known, with the former welterweight champion accusing him of his ouster from the ATT gym. Covington has called out Poirier for a fight at the welterweight division, and it will be interesting to see whether the match-up will ever see the light of the day.
While nothing can be said right now, with Poirier certainly looking to first get his hands on the lightweight strap, never say never. The UFC has never been in a better position, and with Dustin Poirier as the new star in the company, it will be exciting to see where it’s head in the coming days.
