As confirmed by Rockstar Games, a trailer for GTA 6 will be released in early December. The statement comes after a recent rumor that the developer was preparing to make an announcement as soon as this week. In support of those assertions, studio co-founder Sam Houser noted that Rockstar will celebrate its 25th anniversary next month and thanked players for their unwavering support throughout the years.
Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, more than 11 years ago. With the help of next-generation enhancements and the enduring popularity of GTA Online, it has nearly sold 190 million copies, with 5 million of those sales occurring in Q4 2023.
Though it fits the timeline, it is unclear if the trailer release of GTA 6 is scheduled for The Game Awards on December 7.
Will AI help in making hit games?
The excitement around Grand Theft Auto 6 has reached a fever pitch. It has been ten years since Rockstar released its last game in the series. However, CEO Strauss Zelnick disclosed fresh information about the impending game and discussed how the development of generative AI can improve the next Grand Theft Auto ahead of a significant earnings call from parent company Take Two.
When questioned about AI’s advantages for the video game industry, Zelnick gave a positive response. Nevertheless, he expressed reluctance, stating that while “it may be better, it almost certainly will not be faster and cheaper.” He predicts that Take-Two will have to make significant efforts to build its own AI. This will be due to a race to adopt the technology.
Therefore, he doesn’t believe that the use of generative AI will result in cheaper costs for well-known commercial games. It will increase the level of competition for developers who don’t have access to AI.
That investment might be worthwhile, though. Zelnick stated that non-player characters (NPCs) are one area in which generative AI may enhance games. More specifically, the technology might make discussion trees more varied and encourage players to return.
When questioned about how Take-Two’s business would be impacted by the new generation technologies, Zelnick responded, “We’ve been in the AI business since the dawn of this industry,” during yesterday night’s earnings call. He went on to say that he didn’t think generative AI would lead to making hit games. “Do I think AI is going to make hit games? No”, said Zelnick in his opinion of whether AI can create good games on its own.
He continues to think that there will always be a need for creative people. Better toolsets, in his opinion, only serve to raise the bar. They provide a chance to perform better and do more. Zelnick believes that automating game production processes will result in less menial work and more high-level work. This is regardless of whether this means that actual humans will have fewer jobs as a result.
