SUMMARY
- Call of Duty's yearly releases are one of the staples of the gaming community, with the 2023 entry being a disaster.
- Insider Gaming reports that the next Call of Duty seems to be a direct sequel to Call of Duty Black Ops 2, set 6 years apart.
Call of Duty released by Activision is a video game series and media franchise that started in 2003. Numerous handheld and spin-off games were produced by a number of developers. On November 10, 2023, the most recent game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, was released.
With Infinity Ward creating Call of Duty (2003), Call of Duty 2 (2005), and Treyarch developing Call of Duty 3 (2006), the series initially concentrated on the World War II scenario. Since then, the Call of Duty franchise had a lot of different “eras” ranging from its early World War 2 days, serving as almost an interactive version of historical events, to the age of modern warfare and that of the far future.
Some players have been strongly against significant changes, such as COD: Infinite Warfare’s space-based gameplay and overemphasis on advanced features like jet packs and wall-running. But COD: Black Ops 2, one of the best-loved titles in the franchise, was the first to bring COD into the modern era. It is still mostly considered one of the greatest in the series and was able to find a balance.
Is Call of Duty 2025 a direct sequel to Black Ops 2?
Insider Gaming has discovered from a number of sources that Call of Duty 25 is reportedly slated to transport players to the future. The game is currently being developed under the codename “Saturn”. Since Black Ops 4 in 2018, Call of Duty has not released a game set in the future.
The rumor that Call of Duty 2025 will be a direct sequel to the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 game and will reportedly use many of its features and maps suggests that fans may get their wish somewhat.
Call of Duty 2025’s narrative will reportedly occur around 2030, approximately five years after the events of Black Ops 2, so it won’t be as far into the future as the latter was when it was first published in 2012. After Menendez’s death, it is anticipated that characters from that game would reappear to pose a new threat.

There have been rumors that the game will have updated Black Ops 2 maps, a redesigned movement system, and the reintroduction of the pick-10 class system. Reportedly, new maps will also be introduced in Call of Duty 2025.
Regarding whether or not Call of Duty 2025 will make use of the recently implemented “carry forward” feature, which permits players to transport weapons, skins, and other equipment between games, an insider informed Insider Gaming that the game is “completely new,” but they would not confirm or deny anything further.
Given that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is one of the best-selling games in the franchise to date with official sales of just under 30 million units, it seems reasonable that Activision will take advantage of nostalgia while also providing gamers with fresh and engaging content.
