The initial set of information about the single-player campaign of Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game has been floating on the internet lately. The upcoming game rumored to be called Black Ops Gulf War, is believed to adopt the open-world missions from Modern Warfare 3.
The game’s open-world campaign is being developed by Raven Software, while the multiplayer and zombies aspect will be taken care of by Treyarch Games. It will bring back some Black Ops characters such as Adler, who will be a part of the player’s team.
Black Ops Gulf War has an open-world story mode
A report by Insider Gaming reveals that the 2024 Call of Duty game will be having an open-world single-player campaign. The story mode is reportedly being handled by Raven Software, while Treyarch looks after its multiplayer features, as per sources.
Notably, the sources reveal that Raven Software has never worked on a standalone Call of Duty game before this. However, they have assisted in the development of 14 installments of the series entries including all five Black Ops titles to date, starting in 2010.
Although the Modern Warfare 3 campaign has experimented with open-world stories before this, it largely faced negative responses from the fans as well as critics. Several players also argue that Warfare 3’s “so-called” Combat Missions are simply Warzone matches with AI opponents. On the other hand, some fans think of these campaigns as the series’ single-player low point.
That being said it is rumored that the Black Ops Gulf War will continue with the open-world story missions. However, this time around, it will feature campaigns built from the ground up instead of including recycled content.
Besides the game’s open world will have the player and their squad navigating the map in a similar fashion as Far Cry, and will be different from anything ever seen before in the Call of Duty universe. Players will have the ability to use vehicles to travel around, while also using a fast travel system to reach from one point to the next.
Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War possible release date
It was earlier rumored that Treyarch’s next shooter was scheduled to release in 2023. However, it is believed that later Activision decided to eventually push it back to 2024. Consequently, the next open-world shooter was replaced by Modern Warfare 3 in Call of Duty’s annual lineup for 2023. Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War is expected to hit the shelves sometime in October 2024.

This also makes Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War the first-ever installment in the Call of Duty franchise to have a four-year development cycle. Additionally, a leak that surfaced in November 2023 revealed that the upcoming game would be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War, and hinted at its early ’90s setting.
The leak about the game featuring an open-word campaign attracted mixed reactions from the fans. While some fans seemed optimistic about the possibility of getting a fully original single-player campaign in an open setting, there were some others who were doubtful.
The doubts majorly arise because of Modern Warfare 3, the latest installment, turning out the worst-rated mainline game in the history of Call of Duty. The game received a negative reception mainly for its dull single-player campaign. This has made fans cautious about the upcoming shooter.
