Mortal Kombat 1, the new iteration in the long-running Mortal Kombat series, has been highly anticipated. The story is set to be a reset in the universe and not a continuation of Mortal Kombat 11. Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, when questioned about the storyline, has told reporters,
“This is really the beginning of a universe, in a sense. It is not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story. The characters have completely different roles in this new timeline. And we really wanted to punctuate that and emphasize it with our title,”
“So, this is Mortal Kombat 1. It is a brand new beginning. Like I said, You’ll see these characters reintroduced in their new roles and relationships with each other. That’s the main catalyst for calling it Mortal Kombat 1.”

The Storyline in the new title is that The ruler of Outworld, Shang Tsung, has his eyes set on conquering Earthrealm. However, according to the rules set by the Elder Gods, one realm can only conquer another if they defeat them in ten consecutive Mortal Kombat tournaments.
Moreover, Shang Tsung has already won nine of these tournaments against Earthrealm. Further, if he wins the tenth, Earthrealm will be conquered. So, the stakes are sky-high. Thus, Raiden, the God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm, gathers a group of warriors to represent Earth in this do-or-die Mortal Kombat tournament. The original roster includes characters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade.
