A fresh new rumor has been doing rounds on the internet, which could bring a huge revolution to how games are played. According to leaks, Sony is reportedly working on PlayStation Portable 2. Just when the user thought the PlayStation handheld was dead, the leaks beings fresh new hope.
It is believed to be the successor to PlayStation Portable released in December 2004. The PlayStation Portable also known as PSP was Sony’s first-ever handheld video game console. The leaker claims that Sony has already given the chipmaker AMD the go-ahead to start developing next-generation chips for the new PlayStation gaming consoles. These new PlayStation consoles include the PlayStation 6 as well as the leaked portable PlayStation Handheld gaming console.
The leaker shared that although there is no design fixed in mind for the console yet, it will surely be different from the recently launched PlayStation Portal. In terms of the internal specifications, it is said that the next PlayStation handheld will be powered by a next-generation AMD processor featuring APU (Advanced Processing Unit). Besides, it could come with 18 Compute Units (CUs).
It is rumored that the new handheld will be powered by a custom AMD APU, just like what’s seen in Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go. However, this one will be capable of running next-gen consoles on a handheld.
When could PlayStation Portable 2 release?
Moore’s Law is Dead also claims that players can also expect to receive a “pro-like patch” to elevate the performance of some titles to achieve PS5-like quality. However, it will be interesting to see how Sony and AMD will make this work.
Talking of its release, the leaker further states that the alleged PlayStation Portable 2 is “currently in the high-level design phase.” However, the leaker also says that the PlayStation Portable successor is “at least two years out and technically not greenlit for launch yet”.
That being said, it is important to note that PlayStation Portable 2 is merely a leak at this point in time. Like many of Sony‘s previous internal projects, it is possible that the new handheld may never see the light of day or maybe it could change drastically in the coming years leading to its release. In fact, at this point, it is even hard to guess if this new handheld device will be called PlayStation Portable 2 or PlayStation Vita 2.
Besides, Moore’s Law is Dead also notes that the “exact specs” of the new handheld are currently just his speculations. Thus players are advised to take the details with a pinch of salt.
