Valve has finally announced the much-awaited winners of the Steam Awards 2023 on January 2, 2023, at 10 AM PT. The Steam Awards are known for their unique player involvement format which makes it stand apart from the rest. Besides, these awards aim at recognizing the games and honoring the excellence of titles in various aspects of gaming.
Ever since its debut in 2016, the Steam Awards are announced annually to recognize the exceptional video games released on Valve’s game distribution platform. Right from the initial year, the awards are anticipated and looked forward to by fans and the community due to their unique format and their occurrence during Steam’s annual sales.
Who decides the Steam Award winners?
The 2023 Steam Awards featured a total of 11 categories. After a nomination period, that took place between November 21 to November 28, 2023, the platform announced the final lists of nominated games on December 17, 2023. During the nomination period, players could nominate the games they found fit in each of the 11 categories. Post reviewing, Valve announced the nomination list, which included the top five nominated games from each category.
This was followed by the open voting which began on December 21, 2023, at 10 AM Pacific Time, and lasted until January 2, 2023, at 10 AM. Here the players could vote for the game of their choice from the nominated games in each category. Finally, the award winners were announced based on the most votes received on January 2, 2023, at 10 AM PT.
Thus it is the players who decide the winners of the Steam Awards. First, the players decide which game deserves to be nominated in each category and then vote for their best pick from the nominated list. Valve only decides the categories.

And once again it was Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 that swept the Steam Awards 2023 too with the most number of awards (two), just like the other awards of the year. It was named the Game of the Year (unsurprisingly), and Outstanding Story-Rich Game Award at Steam Awards 2023.

Prior to this, the game has already won the Game of the Year award along with five other awards at The Game Awards 2023. Additionally, it bagged the Ultimate Game of the Year and seven other recognitions at the Golden Joystick Awards 2023.
