Currently, GTA Online is the biggest money-making title for developer Rockstar Games. And it’s justified, since even 10 years after release the studio has kept the game going by releasing fresh new content for players regularly.
Nonetheless, it won’t be surprising to see GTA Online‘s stature change after the release of its upcoming title, GTA 6, which promises to be the biggest one not just for the studio but for the gaming space overall. The debate about GTA Online’s fate has already started.
While there are some players who believe that online multiplayer will eventually die out, there are others who have opposing views. GTA 6 is the highly anticipated title, many think that the community will instantly move on from Grand Theft Auto Online. However, it ain’t as easy as it sounds. There are several factors that will come into play.
What happens to GTA Online after GTA 6 releases?
There are multiple features that players are eagerly looking forward to in GTA 6. Among them, one of the most anticipated ones fans are anticipating is the ability to migrate their existing accounts and consequently start GTA 6 with those characters.
That being said, it will still be impossible for Rockstar Games to include every single feature and gameplay mechanic from the older title in the new game. That also essentially means, that GTA 5 and GTA Online will have to keep kicking even when the next game is released.
Notably, the online multiplayer mode for GTA 4 was also active for a brief period of time after Grand Theft Auto 5’s released 10 years ago. Thus there are no chances of GTA Online dying out soon after the new title is released. By any chance, even if it is discontinued, it won’t be immediately.
Similarly, Red Dead Redemption Online is also running even after the developers abandoned it. Although the game receives updates, they are rare. In spite of the limited content, players still play and enjoy the game. The community is hoping that GTA 6 would borrow features from it.
Thus, fans can expect GTA Online to receive fewer updates or new content after Grand Theft Auto 6’s release. However, it won’t die out immediately, and even longer for all the players to abandon it.
GTA 6 release date
Although Rockstar Games is yet to reveal the exact release date, they have revealed a tentative release window. With the release of the GTA 6 Trailer 1, the developer announced that the game will launch sometime in 2025.
Several reports have suggested an early 2025 release for the game. That being said, the 2025 release is only for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The devs have not yet mentioned anything about PC release or other consoles.
Many players are of the opinion that Rockstar Games will take at least another one or two years before ultimately releasing the game on PC. Till then fans on PC can continue enjoying GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online. This also means that Rockstar Games will not shut down the GTA Online servers as soon as the next installment is released officially.
