SUMMARY
- Haas bid adieu to Guenther Steiner ahead of the 2024 F1 campaign
- Ayao Komatsu wins the leading role at Haas over Mattia Binotto and others
The year 2024 began with quite a surprising twist from Haas, with the technical director bowing out of the team. Simone Resta was indeed a brilliant mind, having embraced a successful stint at Ferrari before acknowledging an offer from Haas in 2021. However, shockingly enough, the former Ferrari engineer opted to leave the American outfit without much reason, clearly hinting at a sense of instability within the team.
Subsequently, Resta’s departure only turned out to be the start of something more cynical, as Guenther Steiner, soon after, decided to bid adieu to Haas as well, or should we say, Haas, decided to bid adieu to Steiner. Either way, this move came as a shock to the entire motorsport community, solely because of his healthy relationship with the team.
The Italian-American boss has inarguably been one of the biggest pillars behind Haas’ evolution in F1 over the years. Steiner stood by Gene Haas, as the American business magnate built his Formula 1 team with the help of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean. And now, after nearly a decade, the mantle has been offered to a seemingly unfamiliar name in Ayao Komatsu.
Who really is Ayao Komatsu?
The Japanese-born motorsport engineer has been a part of the industry since 2003, portraying himself as one of the most experienced employees of the Haas outfit. Komatsu has carried more than one role in his 21-year career, including that of a race engineer. He worked from the pit lane for ex-Renault star, Vitaly Petrov in 2011.

But, it was really Grosjean who transformed his motorsport career; Komatsu spent a significant number of years working as the Frenchman’s race engineer before following him into Haas. Only this time, Komatsu was finally relieved of the pit lane duties and was instead handed a more significant role as trackside engineering director.
And now, for the first time in his career, Komatsu will be leading an entire Formula 1 team from the front, competing against the likes of Toto Wolff, Mike Krack, Christian Horner, and several other masterminds.
Why signing Komatsu is a good decision for Haas
One might wonder why Haas didn’t consider a more experienced option in ex-Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto, or even Cyril Abiteboul or Otmar Szafnauer. The aforementioned names are proven team principals and do flaunt a solid portfolio. However, Komatsu could be something far bigger. The 47-year-old engineer will be wielding this role for the first time and could well hit a home run in his very first year.
Guenther Steiner’s departure from Haas, and the rate of turnover, means Mike Krack – who was appointed by Aston Martin not quite two years ago this week – is now the third-longest serving #F1 Team Principal.

The newly recruited team principal would want to orchestrate something special at Haas. And the fact that he knows the entire team inside out, is an added perk. Therefore, will the mysterious racing engineer be able to fill in the shoes of someone like Steiner? Has Haas finally found the missing piece to their unfinished Formula 1 puzzle? Only the future will tell.
