Months after bidding a final goodbye to Formula 1, the legendary Michael Schumacher headed to the French Alps in 2013 only to endure the most horrifying incident of his entire life. The German sustained severe injuries to his head following a scary accident while skiing with his son and former Haas F1 driver, Mick Schumacher. Unfortunately, the fans have since been kept in the dark about Schumacher and his condition.
Almost a decade has passed, and the silence continues to persist within the Schumacher family. The seven-time world champion’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, has majorly kept her husband’s medical condition a secret for over nine years now albeit with minor revealings by a handful of Schumacher’s close mates.
One question that still bugs a lot of fans is whether Schumacher is still in a coma. The truth is Schumacher was indeed in a medically induced coma for 250 days from the day of the diabolical crash whilst the doctors conducted numerous surgeries on the racing legend. However, reports suggested that was partially, if not entirely conscious when the German finally made his way from the hospital to his home in Switzerland.
The likes of former Ferrari director Jean Todt and former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan made a subtle revelation about Schumacher’s state, almost hinting that the German is far from complete recovery.
Michael Schumacher’s current condition has been kept under wraps
As mentioned earlier, not everyone has permission to visit the Schumacher family. To this day, only a handful of people who have worked closely with Michael Schumacher in F1 have had the green light to visit him. Eddie Jordan opined that Schumacher is “there but not there“. He further added that Corinna was almost “like a prisoner“, struggling to step out of the house due to the constant presence of the media.
“This was the most horrific situation for [son] Mick and Corinna. It’s been nearly ten years now and Corinna has not been able to go to a party, to lunch, or this or that. She’s like a prisoner because everyone would want to talk to her about Michael when she doesn’t need reminding of it every minute,” he said according to The Mirror.
In 2020, Jean Todt revealed that Schumacher was “fighting” and no more words came out of the Frenchman’s mouth. Weeks later, leading neurosurgeon Erich Riederer claimed that Schumacher could still be in a vegetative state. “I think he’s in a vegetative state, which means he’s awake but not responding,” he said. “He is breathing, his heart is beating, he can probably sit up and take baby steps with help, but no more.
“I think that’s the maximum for him. Is there any chance of seeing him like he was before his accident? I really don’t think so,” he concluded. Overall, an unfortunate incident that has caused such a painful reaction, not only to Schumacher but to his entire family. To this day, Mick Schumacher waits for his father to watch him race in F1. Therefore, will the young German’s dream be fulfilled?
