Mick Schumacher, the son of Michael Schumacher was once a driver for Haas. However, his driving skills were not one of the many things that made him stand out in the team. While his teammate was working on getting the team somewhere, Mick was struggling to not hit any barriers. Although in no time, Guenther replaced Mick with Niko Hulkenberg.
Mick Schumacher was known for costing the team a big amount of expenses. With his accident-prone driving, he has caused multiple accidents which have resulted in the team paying heavy repair costs. Meanwhile, Niko Hulkenberg had shown off his driving skills by driving for Racing Point and Aston Martin. The German was driving part-time for teams in 2020 amidst all the COVID-19 diagnoses.
This, however, left Haas eyeing the German for their next season. Soon enough, with no talks of Mick Schumacher’s 2023 contract, Niko Hulkenberg was announced to be their next driver alongside Kevin Magnussen. While the team did suffer from a little tension clouding over in their garage, Magnussen and Hulkenberg found ways to work things out together.
Guenther showers Niko Hulkenberg with praises
With Niko Hulkenberg’s performance, Guenther has been impressed. The German has brought his team points this season and also worked well with the car. The star has brought the Haas team way ahead of their game and continues to do a great job at the team.
Gunther Steiner recently spoke about Niko Hulkenberg and how it is to have him on the team. Definitely being refreshed by the less amount of crashes they have suffered this year, Guenther only had good things to say about the German driver. Niko, according to Guenther, has been very focused to get the team to the top. He gets along with everyone and formed a very important bond with the team in a very less amount of time.
When talking to Motorsport.com, Guenther said, “I’ve been pretty, pretty impressed. We took him for one reason because we know he can drive a race car. The doubt was after three years as not a full-time driver, how long does it take him to catch up?”
He then went on to talk about Niko’s performance. Steiner praised the driver and blamed the car for not giving them the results necessary. He said, “It’s the car that’s not good enough, so we need to work on the car – I don’t think we’ve got a driver problem. The team is very happy with Nico, personally as well.”
With the team being happy with Hulkenberg’s performance, Guenther seems to be sure of having him in the next season too. However, nothing has been confirmed by the team. On the contrary, Mick Schumacher is now a test driver for Mercedes. He has spent his time in the Mercedes garage this season.
