While motorsport appears thrilling more so F1, there are moments when it may get frenetic. Although racing at the highest level may seem glamorous, the reality is far more challenging. A great deal of stress is a result of living on the edge, as seen by all of the things that occur in the circuit during Formula 1 races. While drivers need to keep their cool to prevent blunders, adjusting to on-track mishaps typically becomes unavoidable.
During the recent 2023 campaign, the reigning champion, Max Verstappen got into a heated verbal clash with Mercedes’ George Russell post-collision during the sprint race at Azerbaijan Grand Prix. As the strict restrictions regarding any physical altercations set up by the FIA prevent physical fights, there are instances where drivers would throw in hands on one another.
George Russell says Max Verstappen’s reaction was ‘pathetic’ after Azerbaijan GP Sprint clash… What does this weekend have in store for us? 🏎️💨

Here is the sequence of events that led the gentlemen at Formula 1 to find themselves involved in physical fights:
5. James Hunt and F1 Marshal (Canadian Grand Prix, 1977)
Outperforming Nikki Lauda to win the World Championship in 1976, James Hunt became notorious for his flashy and even preposterous style during his motorsport adventures. However, the following year unfolded quite differently for the British racer. Having difficulty keeping up with the pack, Hunt was involved in a dramatic incident at the 1977 Canadian Grand Prix.
In an attempt to sneak past teammate Jochen Mass, Hunt unintentionally bumped into Jochen Mass’s McLaren, forcing him to spin off the circuit. Not one to back down, Hunt made some hostile gestures in Mass’s direction, visibly agitated. Strangely enough, the driver jumped out of his car and punched a marshal who was trying to step in to help out.
The marshal, unfortunately, became the unintentional victim of the Briton’s furious outburst.
4. Nelson Piquet and Eliseo Salazar (German Grand Prix, 1982)
Throughout the race, Nelson Piquet, who lined up fourth on the grid, led the bunch while retaining his position during the race. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when he encountered Eliseo Salazar. The unexpected unfolded when Piquet tried to pass Salazar. As a result of Salazar’s stubbornness to slow down, both drivers were forced to withdraw after an abrupt collision.
Raging by what had happened, the Brazilian champion hastily got out of his car and went up to Salazar. Frustrated, the driver swung wild fists at the other guy. Known for his aggressive form, Piquet not only resorted to cussing but also caused violent conflicts, including on and off-the-track disputes during other races.
3. Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna (Belgian Grand Prix, 1987)
In the dynamic era of the 1980s and early ’90s, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna represented F1 racing’s spirit in the audience. Their intense on-track exchanges were a spectacle that kept spectators hooked. Their bitter rivalry entered a fresh era in 1987 in the Belgian Grand Prix.
In point one, Mansell moved fast to take the lead and earned pole position during the race. But Senna, his longtime opponent, led from the front. A daring attempt was made by the British driver, who was keen to pass, but Senna resisted. Due to a subsequent collision, both drivers had to withdraw from the race. Later, Mansell, evidently furious, pursued Senna back in the garage.
Following the incident, Mansell launched a fit of hostility and threats and even flung a couple of fists off-camera. Fans witnessed a dramatic and historic scene when their antagonism, which was not confined to the track, spilled over.
2. Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard (Belgian Grand Prix, 1998)
Set up for a dramatic competition in Belgium in 1998, the venue got saturated twice as a result of an extended holdup after an awful incident that claimed the lives of multiple drivers. Michael Schumacher took a controlling lead after the resumption. He had an excellent chance to close the distance on Mika Hakkinen, the leader of the championship, who had pulled out early in the race.
But when Schumacher tried to pass Hakkinen’s teammate, David Coulthard, the ideal scenario took a negative turn. Schumacher initiated a move, but Coulthard rested his racing line, and the two crashed. Schumacher had to withdraw early from the contest after the accident broke a wheel off his Ferrari.
An upset Schumacher wanted to confront Coulthard when the two drivers entered the pit garage. The violent confrontation was stopped by the quick intervention of race officials. The two drivers were engaged in a tense and stressful debate, even with the intervention.
1. Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon (Brazilian Grand Prix, 2018)
Just a few years ago, the Dutch F1 driver at Red Bull engaged in a memorable clash with Ocon who was driving for Force India back in 2018. In Sao Paulo, Verstappen presented impressive skills as he led the team past the other contenders engaged in the race. Just as victory looked inevitable, something very unexpected happened.

With fresh tires, the French driver, one lap behind the race leader, made an effort to squeeze past Verstappen. However, Max was not ready for this and this caused a collision that sent the driver flying off the course. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took advantage of this situation and raced ahead which led to a victory eventually.
Later, a vengeful Verstappen went into Ocon’s lane and had a physical dispute with Ocon that featured hitting and pushing. He even declared he would escalate the situation further. The speedy intervention of F1 stewards and officials averted this stressful scenario from getting any worse.
