Former doubles star Peter Fleming has suggested that Murray will be a dangerous player in the tournament and opponents cannot take him for granted. Moreover, he said, “I think that Andy is a danger, he is definitely the sort of guy that nobody is going to want to play.”
Fleming is a seven-time grand slam winner in the doubles category and retired in the year 1988. He has won four Wimbledons and three US Opens in his decade-long career.
As per Fleming, Djokovic and Nadal are the favorites to win the tournament this year. While Djokovic is currently not in his best form, he is still better than most of the players. On the other hand, Nadal is in good form after his recent French Open title but may struggle due to his chronic foot injury.
Peter Fleming doesn’t think Andy Murray can win the Wimbledon this year
Fleming agrees that Murray has the potential to play a good tournament but doesn’t have what it takes to win the tournament. A tournament like Wimbledon is very intense and can take a toll on a player’s mental and physical health.
Furthermore, Fleming said, “To expect him to win seven matches, best of five sets, that is asking a lot at this point don’t you think?” Murray has not yet played five-set matches till now in the grasscourt season. His stamina and energy will be tested especially during the long games.
According to Euro Sport, Fleming also said, “If he had to play seed in the first round, nobody is going to want to have to do that. No one is going to want to play him, so if he wins that match, because he would expect to beat a lot of seeds, now he is right in the seeds draw.”
Considering Murray’s experience, he understands the dynamics of the tournament very well. He knows that he will have to play top seeds if he wishes to play till the very end to win the Wimbledon 2022.
