Brock Lesnar has been away from WWE for a long time, but despite his recent absence from the company, The Beast’s reputation as a top guy in the industry is intact in the professional wrestling world. Ever since his 2012 return to the Triple H-led promotion, Brock has been among the biggest draws in the industry, and his booking deserves a huge credit for this.
From breaking The Undertaker’s streak to beating the likes of Triple H and Randy Orton in his initial feuds, Brock Lesnar took the industry by storm in the early 2010s. But if there was one match that showed everyone how dominant he can be, it was his SummerSlam 2014 clash with WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena.
The Beast Incarnate challenged Cena for the prestigious title and even won it, but the way he did so was something that nobody from the wrestling community expected. Their main event match was one of the most one-sided bouts of John‘s career, and after it, Lesnar was spotted gloating about his victory.
Following his historic victory over The Cenation Leader, The Beast had an on-the-street interview with a journalist, during which he was asked about the belts he was carrying. To the question, Brock said, “By the way, it still has John Cena’s name on it. Now, talk about taking the title, and then, taking it with his name on it, and I am wearing it.”
Just after this, Lesnar was asked whether he would like to somehow merge these two titles by any chance, to which the former UFC star said, “I ain’t carrying two freaking belts.” Through this conversation, The Beast Incarnate not only talked about his victory, but also hinted at a unification of titles that eventually became a reality in WWE.
Brock Lesnar achieved a rare WWE record by beating John Cena
The Beast Incarnate shared how he’s not willing to carry two titles at once after his victory at SummerSlam 2014. But, alongside showing his dominance to the audience, Brock Lesnar also achieved a rare WWE record by beating John Cena in their one-on-one encounter. For those wondering what it was, Brock became just the fourth superstar to win the title.
Randy Orton became the first unified champion after defeating John in a title unification match at the TLC event in December 2013. After The Viper, it was Daniel Bryan, as he won the title in a triple-threat match involving Batista and Randy, which was one of the most memorable WrestleMania main events. But soon he had to vacate the title, after which John won the championship.
The Cenation Leader won the title at Money in the Bank 2014, as he was the victorious participant in the ladder match to crown the new champion. But his title reign was cut short by Brock Lesnar, as the veteran defeated Cena after hitting 16 suplexes and two F-5s, thus becoming the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Stone Cold Steve Austin was the mastermind behind Brock Lesnar’s dominant victory
The Beast made John Cena look like a jobber during their match at SummerSlam 2024, but it wasn’t the initial plan. In fact, Stone Cold Steve Austin was the mastermind behind Brock Lesnar’s dominant victory, as he stated that it would be even better for Brock to win the match in the most dominant fashion possible.
This revelation was made by none other than The Cenation Leader, as he shared that it was The Texas Rattlesnake’s idea. The fan-favorite superstar said, “I remember Brock being like ‘Hey I had dinner with Steve Austin last night and we came up with this idea where I just start suplexing you and don’t stop and then beat you’. I’m like well we both collectively agreed that you just beat The Streak, we ruin that if we have a fifty-fifty match.”
The decision to book Lesnar to destroy Cena in their SummerSlam encounter turned out to be a great move, as it helped The Beast immensely. Over the next few years, the former UFC star competed against some of the biggest names in promotion, and it helped him register his name among some of the best professional wrestlers in history.
