Canelo Alvarez is coming off a great win against Jaime Munguia on May 4, 2024. While he was coming off the back of three back-to-back wins against the likes of Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, and Jermell Charlo, there were still question marks over Alvarez’s performances. Ever since his loss against Dmitry Bivol, fans have been doubtful of Canelo’s abilities as an elite fighter. But, he put all that to rest with the performance against Munguia.
The 33-year-old Mexican fighter landed 234 punches against Jaime throughout the 12 rounds. In 10 of those rounds, Alvarez outlanded his opponent and won the bout via a unanimous decision. Not only that, Canelo also handed Jaime Munguia the very first knockdown of his career. Despite an impressive start from the youngster, Alvarez relied on his experience and overcame the initial adversities to retain his Undisputed Super Middleweight title.
Canelo Alvarez has his say on the David Benavidez fight
After the win, fans wondered what was next for the Guadalajara native. In the post-match interview following the bout inside the T-Mobile Arena, Canelo Alvarez added that he was looking to take some time off and enjoy his time with his family. However, fans have been clamoring for one particular fight for Canelo and it is against none other but David Benavidez.

Alvarez added, “But you know if the money is right, I may not go (on a family holiday). The money is right, I can fight right now. I don’t give a sh*t.”
Even before the bout against Munguia, Alvarez added that he was not really keen on giving David Benavidez the next title shot. But, as the champ himself said, money could be the deciding factor in making the bout official. However, a lot will also depend on Benavidez himself, who is set to fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk next. If Benavidez wins, the Canelo bout seems inevitable.
Canelo Alvarez clarifies why he did not finish Jaime Munguia
In the press conference after the fight, Canelo Alvarez echoed what he said in the ring. He was extremely happy with his performance against Jaime Munguia. Canelo also added that he did not pursue a finish against the 27-year-old as he was cautious against a dangerous fighter who was much younger and bigger.
Addressing the situation, Alvarez added, “I could finish the fight, yeah. But you know, I take my time. That’s why it’s 12 rounds to see who’s the best and I take my time and I don’t wanna make mistakes. So I did what I (was) supposed to do to win and Munguia is a strong fighter. We need to be careful with that and I just take my time.”
