Is George Kambosos Jr. the Undisputed Lightweight Champion of the World?

George Kambosos Jr is not the undisputed lightweight champion

No, with Devin Haney holding the WBC lightweight championship, Australian boxer George Kambosos Jr. is not the undisputed lightweight champion. George Kambosos Jr. shocked boxing fans around the world after picking up a hard-fought split decision win over the undefeated Teofimo Lopez to secure the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles, However, despite the glitz and gold around his waist, George Kambosos Jr. will have to unify his lightweight gold considering Devin Haney reigns supreme as the WBC lightweight champion.

It’s interesting to know that Kambosos and Lopez did not sign a rematch clause, and hence it’s safe to say that Kambosos won’t be returning to the ring to take on Teofimo Lopez in a rematch. Needless to say, that brings up a lot of possibilities and an undisputed lightweight clash between Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney tops the list.

When will George Kambosos Jr fight Devin Haney for the WBC lightweight championship?

THe 24-year Teofimo Lopez suffered the first loss of his professional boxing career after he dropped a split decision loss against a very talented George Kambosos Jr. who looked much quicker on his feet on the day of the fight. Coming in the back of a staggering win over Boxing great Vasyl Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez was a huge favorite going into the fight.

However, after everything was said and done, it was Kambosos Jr. who caused one of the biggest upsets of 2021, to become the unified lightweight champion of the world.

The WBC allowing the ‘franchise’ belt to be won in the ring quashes any discussion as to whether Kambosos is undisputed or not.

If you have hardware at 135 and your name isn’t George Kambosos, then you’re not the world champion.

Another interesting argument that has been raised in the public is the special belt from WBC that was awarded to Vasyl Lomachenko. What started as a congratulatory belt, also called the franchise belt, is now being passed around as the WBC gold, with George Kambosos Jr as its current holder. Needless to say, this creates a lot of confusion as to whether George Kambosos Jr should be regarded as an undisputed champion.
