SUMMARY
- Demetrious Johnson is the current ONE Flyweight MMA Champion.
- Recently, the 37-year-old finally earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
ONE Flyweight MMA World Champion Demetrious Johnson has virtually done it all in combat sports, but now he can tick Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt off his list of goals.
“Mighty Mouse” announced to his 1.6 million Instagram followers that he had earned the exclusive rank under his coaches Bibiano Fernandes and Yan McCane.
“Amazing day of training!! Thank you to professor @bibianofernandes & professor @yanmccane for presenting me with my black belt promotion today!! It was extremely special also having my two coaches from the start of my mma career there as well @skiddssteve @mmawizard,” he wrote.

“Everyone that I’ve shared mat time with from @grplclub and @flashacademymartialarts showed up to support as well. I’m honored and looking to continuing my journey as a martial artist while also competing as a black belt!”
Johnson’s latest honor follows a decorated recent run on the BJJ brown belt competitive circuit.
Demetrious Johnson dominated as a BJJ brown belt
Prior to his promotion to BJJ black belt, Demetrious Johnson tore it up as a brown belt in recent months.
The American MMA legend hasn’t been seen in his native sport since his scintillating ONE Flyweight MMA World Title defense against arch-rival Adriano Moraes on home soil in May 2023.
But the 37-year-old is still hungry for gold. Johnson swept a field of more than 30 competitors last year to claim the IBJJF Masters World Championship.
He has continued his winning ways in 2024, taking out the top prize in the Master 2 Featherweight division at the tournament in Florida, United States. Despite reportedly weighing around 155 pounds on the day, he also claimed silver in the open weight category.

In winning the open weight tournament, Johnson made headlines when he submitted 6-foot-3, 250-pound monster Mike Medina with a bow-and-arrow choke in the opening round.
While he remains undecided on his MMA future, perhaps a tussle under ONE’s submission grappling rule set could tempt the 12-time UFC Flyweight Champion’s back to the Circle, given his recent focus on expanding his BJJ arsenal.
