During a recent interview, former World No. 1 Roger Federer was asked questions based on his retirement and plans after leaving the tennis courts. The Swiss player explained what he has on his mind regarding the same.
Roger recalled how the last couple of years showed him how the slower lifestyle would work. The 20 times Grand Slam winner said- “I’m actually still very very busy. I feel, I wake up earlier than ever because my body doesn’t need as much rest as it used to.” Federer went on to say he has ‘more time on his hands’ when he wakes up early, because his body will be tired of ‘brutal practice.’
“I feel it’s been really interesting. I want to remain curious and really learn, you know from interesting people,” the grass court champ added. He further cited George Apollo as an example for ‘interesting people.’ He shared that it was exciting to meet and do things with George and the latter’s family.
In the interview, the former World No. 1 added to his retirement response- “You know just keep on working hard. But also enjoy the moments and the process.”
Federer mentioned that he has had talks with his wife about the retirement. And he shared her opinion on the same as well. Mirka Federer, Roger ‘s wife, has told him the latter ‘not to jump from on to the next’ and that once the Swiss champ retires, he should take his time and see what he wants to do with the opportunities around him.
“My kids are in a very important age right now. The boys are seven, the girls are twelve. They need support you know and I want to be there as a dad. And I feel like I have been there so so much,” Roger said during the interview earlier this week.
Federer added that he had no regrets when it came to his children and being there for them. The 40 year old added that the transition from tennis court to the retirement life will be ‘an interesting one.’
He admitted- “It will have its challenges, no doubt about it. Because, my life will be different, the carper will be pulled under my legs a little bit. And maybe I see it easier than it will be. But I’m very confident that the transition will be totally okay and I don’t want to say I’m looking forward to it.
Roger still wants to ‘come back one last time’ and see what’s possible to achieve out on the courts.
Federer mentioned how he tuned in for the Australian Open 2022 final match of Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. He continued that it was nice to see the emotions at the end and thinks Rafael to be a role-model.
Roger Federer last played on tour at the Wimbledon 2022, where he exited in the quarterfinals after losing to Polish Hubert Hurkacz.
