Jose Aldo’s return was one of the biggest talking points ahead of UFC 301. One of the few living legends of the sport, Aldo has often been hailed as the featherweight GOAT by fans and fighters alike. Thus, for him to come back and fight again, it was like seeing the years roll back in front of our very eyes.
For those unaware, it was previously revealed that Jose Aldo would be marking his return to the Octagon at UFC 301. Despite retiring in 2022, Aldo kept busy with boxing and other ventures. That said, when reports first emerged of his return, many believed that the event in Rio De Janeiro made for the perfect opportunity and sendoff for the ‘King of Rio’ himself.

Initially, names like Dominick Cruz were suggested for his return fight. However when that did not materialize, Aldo was put in against the explosive, #12-ranked Jonathan Martinez. Whilst many were a little disappointed with the choice of opponent, the opportunity to see the Brazilian in action for what could be the last time was enough. That said, Jose Aldo ended up making a good case for himself on the night.
Jose Aldo and Jonathan Martinez share a respectful moment after their fight at UFC 301
Coming into the fight, there was some unexpected tension between Jose Aldo and Jonathan Martinez. Whilst many expected a more cordial interaction, the two instead had a very fiery first face-off during fight week. As a result, a lot more fans were hyped for the fight, and possibly even a little fearful of the damage that Martinez could potentially cause to Aldo.
However, as mentioned previously, on the night, ‘Junior’ rolled back the years with a solid performance and showed the young Martinez why he was the GOAT at 145 lbs. Needing a couple of minutes to get back in the feel of things, Jose was sharp, quick, and agile as ever, looking like he hadn’t missed a beat. Moreover, to everyone’s relief, he was able to check and cope with Martinez’s kicking.

By Round 2, Jose was firmly in the driver’s seat and in Round 3, managed to land a left that brought out the wobbly legs from Martinez. Clearly, the young contender was in trouble, and in an act of mercy, Aldo chose to take him down instead. Following the bell, the two sat near the center of the Octagon and shared a wholesome moment wherein Aldo consoled the dejected fighter. Despite their heated interactions, it was all respect between the two in the end.
Jose Aldo reveals his future plans in the UFC
All things considered, Jose Aldo pretty much took Jonathan Martinez to school. Although he wasn’t anywhere near his prime form, Aldo’s pace and speed for his age, took many by surprise. That, along with the fact that he was able to nullify most of what a dangerous finisher like Martinez had to offer pleased a lot of fans in the arena and tuning in worldwide.
In the leadup to the fight, Aldo had explained the true motive behind his retirement and subsequent return. Owing to a long-lasting and active tenure Jose had missed out on a lot and made a lot of sacrifices. Thus, by taking a break and spending time with his family and loved ones, it allowed him to find the fire and passion for fighting he once had. As a result, he believed that he had what it takes to make one more go at the bantamweight crown.
Following the win, Aldo further clarified his plans for the future in the UFC:
“I have to thank Jonathan for this opportunity, and DC my next step now is sitting with Dana, Sean, and Hunter, and we’ll see where it goes.Â
“I said that this wasn’t gonna be my last fight, I think I’m in the physique, I still have the age that I can still fight, I see that I can still go forward, so maybe we can come back in here and become the champion.”
Notably, the Jonathan Martinez fight was the last fight on Jose Aldo’s previous deal. As such, it would stand to reason that he will likely be sitting with the top brass to figure out a new contract for him and likely a multi-fight one. All things considered, Aldo is back for good and plans to make a real go at things. With some interesting opponents and matchups still possible, it will be a joy to witness Aldo’s greatness once again.
