Over a month has passed since Dustin Poirier defeated Conor McGregor via TKO at UFC 264. However, the ending of the fight was very anti-climatic as Conor McGregor was unable to fight after the end of the first round due to a broken tibia.
Consequently, The Diamond breaks down his win at UFC 264 and discusses how the fight would have continued if Conor didn’t get injured in an interview with Ariel Helwani.
“Yeah, I would say well the rematch obviously I knocked him out so you get a conclusion to it. There’s an ending to the fight. The second one his leg breaks so you don’t get that same feel. It’s a win on my record for sure and I was winning. But the second fight I put him away, the third fight I guess is, I don’t know what to say about that.”
“So you know that feeling or especially with the media or the fans say oh you didn’t beat him but second time I got that I beat him. They’re both great but the second time was nice because I knocked his a** out.”
Dustin Poirier indicates that Conor McGregor’s kick landed in a wrong way during their fight
The narrative after Dustin Poirier won his fight against Conor McGregor at UFC 264 was what would have happened if the Irishman was healthy and the fight continued. Many fans and different analysts had several opinions about this topic.
Similarly, Ariel Helwani raised a question to Dustin Poirier about his thoughts regarding Conor’s leg injury and asked him what would happen if the fight lasted longer. Dustin Poirier revealed that “If it wouldn’t happen at the end of that round it was going to happen in the second or third round it was only going to get worse. I definitely felt in control of the fight, even on the feet.”
“I had no idea, I know at the beginning of the fight the time he kicked me I pointed to his leg I knew that it had landed. You know hundreds and thousands of kicks thrown and received throughout my career, I’m guessing hundreds of thousands I’ve been kicked and kicked so many people.”
I know when a kick lands the wrong way and it hurts your training partner or your opponent and he threw one early in the fight that I knew hurt him and that’s why I pointed to his leg but I’m not sure.
