The main event between Curtis Blaydes vs Derrick Lewis has been called off after Blaydes tested positive for coronavirus. Since the pandemic broke, this is the first time that a UFC main-event has been called off due to a positive coronavirus result. It’s definitely bad news for the UFC as Curtis Blaydes vs Derrick Lewis was a potential #1 contender’s match for the UFC heavyweight championship.
As things stand today, Francis Ngannou is the #1 contender for the UFC heavyweight championship. However, Blaydes with a four-fight winning streak was looked at as the next in line. Meanwhile, Derrick Lewis is also on a three-fight win-streak, and was looking at a potential title opportunity for the second time with a win over Blaydes.
Derrick Lewis registered the most number of knockout wins in the history of the heavyweight division with a huge win over Oleenik. On the other side, Blaydes put up a dominant performance against Alexander Volkov in his last fight. Blaydes is quoted as the Khabib Nurmagomedov of the heavyweight division.
UFC Vegas 15 to have a new main event?
It was a dry card to say nonetheless. The only other fight that has the potential to go up the order and main-event this weekend’s card is Anthony Smith. However, “LionHeart” has lost his last two bouts inside the Octagon in a dominant fashion. It might not be wrong to say that it might not be a five-round fight even if Smith is propelled to the main-event spot.
Smith is scheduled to take on Devin Clark. Needless to say, he will look to bounce back with winning colors after back to back losses. It will also mark Smith’s third appearance inside the UFC Octagon. With less than three days to go for UFC Vegas 15, it’s highly unlikely that there will be a quick replacement. Additionally, there aren’t many contenders in the heavyweight division who will like to risk their chances by going against someone as dangerous as Derrick Lewis.
However, it can be said that it’s great news for Lewis who had hinted at missing weight for the upcoming event. Be that as it may, UFC Vegas 15 will go on without its initial main-event. More details awaited.
