Chael Sonnen has an interesting take on who should Nate Diaz face in his return to the lightweight division as confirmed by UFC President Dana White. Earlier, the bossman had stated that they looking for a lightweight fight for Nate Diaz. However, he did add that it’s not going to be Tonny Ferguson. That leaves a lot of speculation about who this new opponent for Nate Diaz might be.

“Only two guys who are left available off the top guys are Gaethje and Oliveira. Now we have been told as an audience that those two guys are going to get together but it’s not official. So it must be, Nate is either gonna fight Gaethje or Oliveira.” Chael Sonnen said.
It is an interesting observation and one that makes complete sense in terms of who might be Diaz’s next opponent as he makes his lightweight return. With Hooker set to face Michael Chandler in his UFC debut at UFC 257 in the co-main event, the UFC’s lightweight division looks stacked.
“I am hearing from other sources that the fight that Nate is being offered is Tony Ferguson.”
However, according to Chael Sonnen, the opponent who is being talked about to face the Stockton Slugger is none other than El Cucuy Tony Ferguson. The former interim champion is coming off back to back losses at the hands of Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira.

Justin Gaethje should face Nate Diaz next
It’s unlikely that Diaz will fight a fighter coming off back to back losses. In such a situation, it only makes sense for the UFC to book him against either Gaethje or Oliveira, or the winner of Hooker vs Chandler.
Be that as it may, Conor McGregor has expressed his desire to welcome Nate Diaz back to the lightweight division with a title opportunity should reclaim the UFC’s lightweight championship.
Nate Diaz vs Justin Gaethje is an exciting match-up and one that provides Nate Diaz a title opportunity. While equally exciting in terms of fighting style, the match could also serve as the potential #1 match for the UFC’s lightweight championship. Additionally, it will serve the purpose of McGregor’s extending his wish to face Diaz for the championship belt should Diaz triumph over Gaethje.
