The United States government after months of hard work was able to bring back Brittney Griner from Russia. Griner spent almost 10 months in a Russian prison after being sentenced to 9 years in prison. The news of her return in came in the wake of a prisoner swap deal between the US and Russia involving Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. This news received a mixed reception.
Griner after returning home didn’t immediately make a statement, her agent spoke on her behalf and confirmed her well-being to the media immediately after her release. She left more serious questions and comments on her response to BG. Griner did break her silence and expressed gratitude towards all the members involved in the work put in, to bring her back home. In the message, she also made her decision to return to the Phoenix Mercury and play in the WNBA.
Brittney Griner is coming home.
Just incredibly good news.
Thank you to President Biden and everyone in the administration who made this happen, as well as the advocates who pushed for it. https://t.co/xwAIyArOoK

There were Americans who called her ‘anti-american’ and would’ve preferred Paul Whelan back home. The remarks came in the wake of her comments on the US National Anthem.
Few consider Griner guilty and someone who hates America. Griner made crude remarks on the American National Anthem, but she clarified her statement, confirming she meant no disrespect. Griner further weighed that she is very patriotic, and grew up in a family that upheld American values, even reminding fans how his father served in the Vietnam war. We are all aware that Griner has a love for tattoos and the love for her country is apparent there as well.
What does the shoulder tattoo on Brittney Griner signify?
Brittney has a lot of tattoos inked on her body. Notably, she has five-point star tattoos on both her shoulder. The five-point star has a variety of meanings, like guidance, ambitions, protection, and hope. Some of the less desirable characteristics of the tattoo are gang affiliation. Whatever the case may be she does not belong to any gang. The five-point star tattoo is also used by sailors and is a symbol of American patriotism.
In the case of Griner, it is safe to assume that the five-point tattoo on her shoulder represents her patriotism towards her country. Her father fought in the Vietnam war and was an officer of the law for 30 years. She also clarified her comments which were misinterpreted by many, “I don’t mean that in any disrespect to our country. My dad was in Vietnam and a law officer for 30 years. I wanted to be a cop before basketball. I do have pride for my country.”
Needless to say, amidst all the drama that surrounds her and her release from Russia, Brittney Griner continues to stand out. She has paved the way for sex neutrality in the world of basketball and has also expressed her desire to work with the President to bring back Paul Whelan and other Americans behind Russian bars.
