Brittney Griner has been a role model for many after going through a tough year last year. She spend 10 months in a Russian prison and was brought back home in December last year. She’s been a victim of harassment on the internet, where someone questioned her sexuality. She has been through some tough times. She voiced the harassment faced by her in school, in her memoir which was released back in 2014.
With Brittney coming out as gay, both her parents were not on board with the idea of their daughter coming out as gay. Brittney’s mother accepted her daughter coming out as gay, however, her father didn’t accept this. When Raymond knew about his daughter coming out as gay he didn’t take the news well. “I ain’t raising no gay girl in my house! You can pack your sh*t and get the fu*k out!” Griner mentions this in her book.
The WNBA Champion has faced discrimination based on her gender identity and her looks. However, she has been vocal about her struggles. She was a victim of verbal abuse and it still haunts her to this day. With that said, Griner couldn’t get the full support of her family for her coming out as gay. Even with the abuse in school, her father didn’t support her.
Raymond Griner didn’t support Brittney Griner after coming out as gay
Brittney hide the fact that she was gay from her father, as her father expected her to be a “normal girl.” Griner opened up about her feelings and her gender identity with her mother, but was unwilling to confront her father. “He obviously suspected I was gay because he would occasionally say something cryptic…Several of my teammates in high school were openly gay and I knew my dad disliked them,” Griner said.
