The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted the great LeBron James as the 1st overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. From that point onwards, it would be safe to say it has been King James’ time. He has gone on to win 4 championship rings with the Cavs, the Miami Heat, and the Los Angeles Lakers. Together with that, he has made a sensational evolution as a player as well, taking part in his 20th season now.
LeBron’s illustrious career makes us wonder if he was a great player even before joining the NBA. The answer to that question would be yes. However, unlike many others, James never went to college. It is quite surprising that he entered the NBA Draft almost a decade ago straight out of high school.
Did LeBron James finish high school?
LeBron did his high school education at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School before joining the league. Many have wondered if he finished his education there before becoming a superstar in the NBA. The answer would be he did finish high school education. He was at the school from 1999 till 2003, the year he introduced himself to the whole world.
During high school, James averaged 25.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. It looks like The King put up more than 20 points on the board even before joining the NBA.
The most notable fact about his high school basketball career would be that he led his school to three state championships. Considering that he was only present for 4 years, the achievement is quite astonishing. After his exceptional performances on the court, LeBron was given the title of Mr. Ohio on three occasions. The award was given to the best high school basketball player from each year.
During this time, James’ former coach Dru Joyce II managed to convince his mother, Gloria James, to make him join the basketball team. That was the start of something special for the young boy from Akron. He became a part of the iconic Fab 5 team that made history for their high school. If we’re being honest, James was the only one who went on to have a career in the NBA. The others took a different path in their careers along the way.
James was also a football player during high school. And to say that he was decent would be quite an understatement. In just two seasons as a football player, LeBron made 103 catches, together with 23 touchdowns. Notre Dame was one of the Division I schools to recruit him. He didn’t play in a football game due to a wrist injury he suffered during a basketball game.
LeBron chose basketball in high school despite having the potential to possibly make it in football. However, it wouldn’t be wrong if we claim that he might have made the right decision. Ultimately, he has become one of the greatest basketball players of all time, thanks to a life-changing decision he made when he was just 19 years old.
