As NBA fans will know, Michael Jordan acted in a movie called Space Jam many years ago. It is a basketball-themed movie franchise that even LeBron James acted in during its sequel called Space Jam 2. We are all aware that the Oscar awards are a prestigious event where a few excellent movies get nominated to win.
With that being said, we should certainly want to know if Space Jam featuring the Chicago Bulls legend managed to win the Oscars. Therefore, we must take a closer look at the success it found and other details surrounding the production of the movie.
All the awards Michael Jordan’s Space Jam won
It turns out that Jordan acting in Space Jam or the movie itself simply wasn’t good enough to win an Oscars award. In fact, Space Jam was never even nominated as one of the contestants to win it. Perhaps this is surprising considering that the franchise managed to generate quite a lot of revenue with its release.
In the United States, it made around $90.5 million. Additionally, it also made 159.7 million throughout the rest of the world, bringing the grand total to $250.2 million. While these numbers don’t seem very impressive when compared to other recent movies, fans should remember that Space Jam was released all the way back in the November of 1996.
Although it never won an Oscar, the movie still managed to rack up a tidy amount of accolades. Here is a list of the awards that Space Jam won after its release.
- 1997 ASCAP Film and Television Music awards
- 1997 Annie awards
- 1997 Grammy awards
- 1997 MTV Movie awards
- 1997 Satellite awards
- 1997 World Animation Celebration awards
- 1997 Young Artist awards
As we can tell, Space Jam still managed to obtain quite a lot of accolades including the prestigious Grammy awards. Due to it being a crossover involving characters from the Looney Tunes world, it also managed to win animation awards and so on.
The movie in itself was quite interesting and entertaining. Especially for younger audiences, which it was targeting in the first place. After all, a crossover story involving Michael Jordan helping Bugs Bunny and the squad win a basketball game, while also managing his own life, would undoubtedly be worth watching.
Space Jam might not have won an Oscar. Be that as it may, many fans are still convinced that it is infinitely superior to its sequel Space Jam 2 featuring LeBron James.
