In the wake of Kyrie Irving demanding a sudden trade from the Brooklyn Nets, fans must be interested in knowing more details surrounding his contract and when the Nets star will become a free agent if he doesn’t sign a new deal with the Nets organization.
Kyrie was already suspended earlier this season and was finally balling out free from controversy. However, this sudden trade request has brought the focus back on him and his current situation with the Nets. Let us take a look at Irving’s contract and the situation that he is in at the moment.
Kyrie Irving signed a 4 year $136 million contract with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2019 season
NBA fans will remember how the Brooklyn Nets turned from a normal franchise into a contender. It all happened during the 2019 off-season when Irving decided to leave the Boston Celtics. Durant who has been a close friend of Kyrie was also entering free agency with the Golden State Warriors at the time.
Therefore, both stars went to the Nets. However, as we know, Durant was injured at the time and was sidelined for the season. As a result, it fell upon Kyrie to keep the Nets relevant and build team chemistry. He was also given a 4 year and $136 million contract by the Brooklyn Nets.
The years have gone by quickly since then and the Nets don’t really have much to show for it. Even after trading for James Harden from the Houston Rockets, all they won is one playoff series. This was against the Boston Celtics in 2021.
When we add this to all of Irving’s eccentric behavior, some might be able to understand why Brooklyn is unwilling to give him a new max contract. He has missed time for multiple reasons and his beliefs are always called out and held against him. Thus, Irving didn’t have the best stance to ask for a new contract.
He is entering free agency this 2023-2024 NBA offseason. If the Nets do not agree to a deal with Kyrie, we might just see him suit up for another team next season. If that does happen, it wouldn’t be very far-fetched to say the Brooklyn Nets’ strength in the eastern conference will heavily decline. While we hope that they are able to come to an agreement, it is almost impossible to say what Irving’s future is going to look like.
