Dallas Mavericks and NBA star Luka Doncic is one of the best young players in the league. The young Slovenian could be the next face of the NBA shortly. However, it is quite rare to hear of a legal dispute between a professional athlete and their mother. This is the case, which drove a wrench between Luka and his mother Mirjam Poterbin. Luka and Mirjam were stuck in a trademark dispute for the ownership of the trademark, “Luka Doncic 7.”
Miryam owns the trademark “Luka Doncic 7” since 2018 when Luka gave written consent to give her control. Mirjam has been a crucial figure in Luka’s life ever since he played his first professional game for Real Madrid in Spain. Ever since then, Mirjam has managed all of Luka’s business transactions. However, with his growing popularity and influence in the league, Luka wanted to take control of his trademark.

According to The Stein Line Luka admitted wanting to take control of his brand. “I have a lot to look forward to as I continue to grow as a player and a person and it’s important to me to control my own brand and focus on giving back to my communities,” Luka said in the interview. Doncic filed a petition to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for Mirjam to give up the rights for the trademark, however, his attempt failed.
However, Doncic decided to go with another design on his sneakers and clothing apparel. It contained his initials LD, number 77, and the letter S which stands for his home country Slovenia.

Luka Doncic is no longer in a legal dispute with his mother since last year. Doncic filed the petition on September 2022, for Poterbin to give up the trademark. However, the case was dragged to court, as Poterbin refused to budge. Doncic sent a written statement back in 2021, where he informed his mother that she does not hold any control over the trademark.
Both parties tried to win the battle, however, this led to rising tensions between the two and severed their relationship. However, the dispute was not settled but rather terminated by the Mavericks star. Doncic is struggling to secure a playoff spot for the Mavericks. The termination of the case is sure to lift one concern from his mind, as he will be hoping to secure a playoff spot in the league.
