Before Brittney Griner married Cherelle a few years ago, she was in a committed relationship with fellow WNBA star Glory Johnson. The latter was a straight woman and had never dated females until Griner came into her life. Johnson claimed that things were different between her and Griner. They met in a Las Vegas basketball camp and feelings erupted between the two. It ultimately resulted in a marriage that only lasted for 28 days.
During the 2014-15 offseason, both lovers would leave to different countries to compete overseas. At that time, the Phoenix Mercury center played in China. According to Cosmopolitan, Johnson claimed that Griner wanted her to visit China and support her. She left her Russian team and went to be with Griner. However, to her surprise, Johnson discovered that BG was talking to an ex-partner of hers.
“I packed up all my stuff,” she said, claiming that she was ready to leave Griner once and for all. However, as she ended up staying back because she believed that Griner would hurt herself.
Johnson revealed that her girlfriend at that time had a rough past which affected her mentally. Glory did not want anything to happen, so she decided to stay back and work things out. Both of them were already engaged at the time and they had decided to have children via IVF.
Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to assault charges filed by Glory Johnson in 2015
Things did not remain healthy between both WNBA players. They struggled to maintain peace and often fought with each other. The situation got even worse between the couple in April 2015. Johnson had asked for a measuring tape and Griner made a sarcastic joke about it. The WNBA player claimed that it was Griner’s nonchalant attitude that always caused fights between them.
Johnson had privately asked Brittney not to be “disrespectful” in front of her sisters, who were present there on the day of the argument. Glory said, “She started throwing a fit, huffing and puffing. Brittney put her whole palm in my face. I knocked her hand out of my face, and I put my hand on her shoulder and moved her to the side.” She also claimed that Brittney began to get even more physical by throwing things at her.
One of Glory’s sisters called the police after Brittney Griner allegedly went inside her room to bring out her gun. As the state of Arizona permits possession of guns without a permit, it was later discovered that Griner owned a gun as well. However, both players were locked up and the WNBA suspended them for seven games. Glory claimed that they talked it out and Griner went on to plead guilty.
