Brittney Griner has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. As fans very well know, she is an openly gay athlete. It takes a lot of courage for an individual to come out to the public. Especially with a massive following as Griner has, there are millions of eyes on her at once. However, shortly after she was drafted in 2013, the former WNBA No.1 overall pick came out of the closet to the world.
The world accepted her for who she was and it still does. Lucky for her, it was a similar situation back in the day. During the GLAAD Award Ceremony, Brittney Griner was called upon the stage to narrate her “coming out” story.
She said, “I’ve been out since about 9th grade, came out to my mom first… I sat on the stairs she was in her room, I was like, ‘Mom I gotta tell you something.’ Came out… so here she was like, ‘I love you.’ I was like, ‘All right well I’m gonna go play some video games.'”
She also said she wishes that other people had it easy like her, as coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community is an extremely difficult step to take for some. “It’s like a light came on me on the inside around me everything I felt like I was Brittney Griner like I was who I am now I wasn’t hiding anymore,” she said, explaining how she felt getting the weight off her shoulders. She is currently married to Cherelle Griner.
Brittney Griner shares words of encouragement with her fans
Brittney Griner has faced many hardships throughout her life for her personality. She once admitted to having issues in high school, a time when people made fun of her appearance. There have been times when some even accused Brittney of lying about her gender. Despite all the speculation and baseless accusations, Griner was born a female.
The Phoenix Mercury All-Star shared a beautiful message to her audience. She believes that no matter how old or young one may be, no matter who they are, one must always be themselves. She said, “It’s never too late, it’s never too early. If you know then you know come out don’t hide it don’t try to be like anybody else.” She concluded by saying, “Be who you are and be comfortable in your own skin. That’s my message to everybody.”

Recently, a video of her answering questions at the Mercury’s media day conference surfaced on the internet. Her fans were shocked at how deep her voice was. People began to accuse the baller of being a man. However, these comments have never bothered her. Griner claims that she has to stay strong as people will always have something to say regardless of her situation.
