Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the Golden State Warriors are one win away from their 4th NBA championship in the past decade. The team that stands in their path is the Boston Celtics. Jayson Tatum led his team through the eastern conference to make their first NBA Finals appearance in a decade.
Klay has been given a much hyped-up nickname by the NBA media as of late, “Game 6 Klay“. As this nickname grows in popularity, Stephen Curry explains the history behind the origin of this nickname. This could not have come at a better time as we head into the climactic Game 6 of the NBA Finals.
Stephen Curry explains Klay Thompson earned the nickname in 2016
The Warriors’ backcourt has dominated the NBA for almost a decade now. This is largely due to their extremely proficient shooting ability. They first made the NBA Finals in 2015. Be that as it may, Steph stated that Klay earned this nickname in a massive playoff game the following year.
” I’m just going to do my job… but Game 6 Klay is … I don’t know how he’s been able to do it it’s just his personality no moments too big for him just in terms of hooping and enjoying himself and embracing hostile crowds, or if we’re at home enjoying the home atmosphere.”
Steph went on to explain the exact point in time when Klay made his mark and earned his nickname. The context is back in 2016 when GSW cut down a 3-1 lead built by Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder to advance to the NBA Finals.
“Obviously the OKC game is the one that’s at the top of the list in terms of how much that meant individually and for us as a team to come back in that series so he has a knack for those types of big moments… they just happen to be game 6’s and he has another opportunity to add to that tale tomorrow.”
The much newer fans of the game will be unaware of the feat that Thompson accomplished in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals back in 2016. He scored a monster 41 points and 4 rebounds with no assists in a mamba-like frenzy to lead the Warriors in scoring and force a Game 7. This is the true origin behind the nickname we hear so often.
