NBA fans aren’t reacting very positively to the latest Twitter post made by Trae Young paying homage to Lionel Messi. As NBA fans will be aware, Young is the star point guard for the Atlanta Hawks and the face of the franchise. Although his team isn’t doing quite well this season, he has still turned them into competitors and managed to carry them all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2021.
While all of that is well and good, his recent tweet has garnered quite a lot of criticism from several people on the internet. Especially since he was referencing a controversial musician and rapper like Kanye West while complimenting Messi. Young certainly has the right to post about whatever he would feel like. However, fans should still wonder whether he crossed the line and did something wrong. Let us take a closer look and find out.
Trae Young referenced a Kanye West song while adorning Lionel Messi’s jersey
Although fans show the tendency to think outside the box and share interesting opinions at times, perhaps they are simply blowing things out of proportion this time. After all, Trae merely shared a few photos of him wearing Messi’s jersey while entering a stadium pre-game. There is nothing wrong with that alone and simply speaks to the fact that Young has a sense of respect or admiration for the Argentine football legend.
“I talk to God every day. That’s my bestie. They playin’ soccer in my backyard. I think I see Messi”💯 pic.twitter.com/9iX2pIE67F

The reason fans are attacking Young is that he chose to quote Kanye, who also has an incredible sense of respect for Messi. In fact, West dedicated a few lines from his album “Donda” to Messi. These were the same lines that Trae included in the caption for his post, “I talk to God every day. That’s my bestie. They playin’ soccer in my backyard. I think I see Messi.”
Nows not the right time to be quoting Kanye💀

These musical bars are certainly catchy and fit the theme of Young’s attire. However, fans didn’t see it that way and thought it is a bad move to quote Kanye. Especially considering that he is in the midst of a lot of scrutiny for making multiple controversial statements. As an inadvertent result of that fans hastened to point out that Young shouldn’t be quoting Kanye lest he gets into “trouble.”

Some pointed out that Trae should simply focus on basketball and the struggles of his team. Others who felt that Ronaldo is superior to Messi didn’t miss the chance to remind Young of that. In any case, Trae is being criticized for simply quoting Kanye while paying homage to Messi.
