Houston Rockets’ Dillon Brooks, known for his direct comments, took a jab at the San Antonio Spurs’ rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama, ahead of their matchup. On Thursday, when questioned about the rising star who is 7-foot-4 tall, Brooks stated, “He’s tall, that’s really it.”
Wembanyama is making headlines for his performances as he scored 15 points in just 23 minutes in his season opener match against the Dallas Mavericks and many calling him the most talented player to enter the NBA since players like LeBron James. His combination of towering height, exceptional wingspan, and guard skills has impressed fans in the league. Even Brooks is also aware of the intense excitement surrounding Wemby.

The background to this exchange is even more interesting. Both the Rockets and the Spurs had a disappointing last season, tying for the lowest record in the Western Conference.
Following it, the Spurs acquired Wembanyama as the No. 1 overall pick. Whereas the Rockets ended up with the No. 4 pick, drafting Amen Thompson. Adding fuel to this developing rivalry, Wembanyama appeared relieved not to be drafted by the Rockets on draft day.
Victor Wembanyama points toward Dillon Brooks after scoring
If Dillon Brooks was hoping to make Victor Wembanyama off his game with his comments, he was in for a surprise. In Friday’s game, Wembanyama showed great talent and potential, ultimately helping the Spurs secure a 126-122 win in overtime against the Rockets.
In a potential response to Brooks’ comments, Wembanyama was seen pointedly gesturing toward him after scoring a significant bucket. But that was just a glimpse of the rookie’s outstanding night. Wemby scored 21 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals by the end of the game. His highlights of the match were when he blocked Jabari Smith Jr. twice in a single possession, and his clutch layup tied the game at 111 with only 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The final moments of the game were undeniably dominated by Wembanyama, as he paired up with teammate Devin Vassell, helping the Spurs overcome a seven-point gap and win. The rookie’s performance was marked by important plays including the tie-making basket at the end of the regular game time and the first basket in overtime.
It will be interesting to see if Brooks or other critics will continue to minimize Wembanyama’s talent and potential. The Spurs have their next match with the L.A. Clippers on 29 Oct at 9 PM (ET).
