During a recent game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, Ric was given a microphone and decided to entertain the audience and also show his support for the Cleveland home crowd. However, the former WWE wrestler decided to take things further by calling out Rudy Gobert and asking for a 1 on 1 match. That said, a closer look at the context is required.
More on Rick Flair’s association with the NBA
There is no denying that Ric Flair caused quite a scene by taunting Rudy Gobert into having a 1 on 1 match with him. Given that he is 75 years old and an old man at this point in time, this was clearly not a legitimate challenge against Gobert. However, not many fans might have even been aware that Ric Flair had an interest in or was associated with NBA games or league activities in any way.
It might surprise the basketball community to hear that Ric Flair has been an NBA fan for several decades now and has attended games. He even had an opportunity to meet and greet Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. Moreover, the former WWE wrestler has also engaged in basketball debates regarding LeBron vs Jordan and has even been interviewed by the NBA media.
Therefore, it would be fair to claim that Rick is one of many celebrities such as Drake or Kevin Hart to take a serious interest in NBA games. He has even made statements regarding the changing eras of basketball and how players of the modern generation are soft compared to the stars he witnessed in action back in his day. In any case, Ric’s challenge to Rudy Gobert was clearly not an official one and fans would be ignorant to expect him to live up to it. Some might even wonder if Gobert took offense or felt the need to react to this taunt.Perhaps it would be in both sides’ best interest to view this challenge as an attention-grabbing move as opposed to a serious invitation to a 1 on 1 basketball game. After all, Gobert would have no problem difficulty in defeating a 75-year-old man.
