With the release of LeBron James‘ new movie “Shooting Stars‘, questions are running rampant concerning his high school basketball team. “Shooting Stars” follows the life of a young LeBron James and his high school teammates Dru Joyce III, William McGee, Sian Cotton, and Romeo Travis. Nicknamed the “Fab Five” they made up one of the greatest high school basketball teams ever.
McGee otherwise known as “Willie” played an integral role in the success of the Fab Five, winning three state titles. The shooting guard was instrumental on defense as well as a knockdown shooter from the mid-range. McGee never went pro like his teammate LeBron James but did stay within the world of Basketball after completing his higher studies.
William McGee now works for the LeBron James Family Foundation
After graduating high school, McGee attended Fairmont State University, where he competed as a football player. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems. In 2008 he returned to his alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary where he coached the boy’s basketball team for the freshman division.
Due to his positive results, St. Vincent-St. Mary offered him a job as athletics director, which he accepted. Simultaneously Mcgee was also the boy’s basketball coach at Akron East, a public high school in the Akron area. The school won a grand total of nine team and individual championships during McGee’s time as the athletic director.
Commenting on his time at St. Vincent-St. Mary McGee says, “St. Vincent-St. Mary gave me an opportunity to get this job,” McGee said. “They propelled me in a way that when I graduated I could go out and feet like the sky is the limit and I could tackle the world. I am eternally grateful for St. Vincent-St. Mary and my time spent there and all of the relationships that I built and the family atmosphere.”
McGee also spent some time coaching at the college level, namely with a stint as a graduate assistant at the University of Akron while he worked towards his master’s degree in physical education and sports administration. Mcgee helped the Akron Zips win a Mid-American conference championship under the head coach, Keith Dambrot. His only other college coaching experience came from his tenure as the assistant coach of the men’s basketball team at Chowan University in North Carolina.
As one of his biggest accomplishments, McGee founded the D.A.L.E Program, L.L.C in 2016. The organization promotes and establishes many events in Akron held for disabled and disadvantaged children, to help empower them and give them a platform to learn athletics, leadership, and general education from.
The now 38-year-old McGee works at the LeBron James Family Foundation specifically as a We Are Family Coach. McGee shared his sentiments on his new job saying, “I love the job at St. Vincent-St. Mary, but I think this is a job that is better suited for me right now and my lifestyle,” McGee said. “This is a dream job that checks all of the boxes.” He continues to maintain a relationship with King James, despite working in a different field right now.
