All NBA fans will be aware that Bronny James is an upcoming young athlete looking to become a player in the NBA. After all, his father LeBron James has already shared the desire to play with his eldest son in the league before eventually retiring. Considering that LeBron is considered to be one of the greatest players in the NBA, this certainly puts a fair share of pressure on his son.
Some fans might already know that Bronny’s official name is LeBron James Jr. However, it has been a long time since anyone has called him that. Instead, he is simply known across the world as Bronny James. That begs the question as to whether Bronny changed his name and his thought process in doing so.
Bronny James has not legally changed his name from LeBron James Jr
It turns out that Bronny James has only informally changed his name from LeBron James Jr. Now, he is 18 years old and has the legal right to change his name. However, he is yet to do so and is still officially known as LeBron James Jr.
Although this could potentially cause some trouble down the line, it might not change Bronny’s NBA career all that much. After all “James” would be on his jersey no matter what and he would be invariably carrying on his father’s legacy. However, it is also possible that Bronny informally changed his name for his own reasons.
According to multiple sources, Bronny did not want to be under LeBron’s shadow for the rest of his life. Having his father’s name given to him would ensure that Bronny struggles in creating his own identity. This was something that Bronny has not wanted for many years and has reportedly changed his name for the same reason.
Thankfully, we know his father supports him in being his own person. While it could be argued that Bronny should feel privileged over being given his father’s name, his younger brother Bryce was given a unique name with no direct connection to LeBron, at least when compared to “LeBron James Jr.”
Bronny only turned 18 years old 6 months ago and shouldn’t rush to make these types of decisions instantly. Having his father’s name might be a blessing or a curse. Bronny should decide for himself how closely he wants to be associated with his father for the rest of his life.
