Devin Haney endured a difficult setback with his loss to Ryan Garcia last weekend. In what was a massive spectacle, the WBC Super Lightweight champion fell short of the mark as he lost a majority decision. All things considered, it is clear that Haney is clearly still miffed by the loss to Garcia.
For those unaware, Devin Haney squared off against Ryan Garcia for the seventh time in his career, the first on the big stage. In the past, the two had met in the amateur on six other occasions, with the tie set at 3 a piece. Thus, with Ryan going one up on the tie, along with giving Haney a brutal beatdown and his first professional loss, it is understandable why it was a tough loss to take.
However, despite the loss, Haney can find solace in the fact that he is still the WBC Super Lightweight champion. Seeing that Garcia missed weight for the fight, he had to shell out $1.5 million as part of his bet with Haney to keep the fight on. Not only that, but Haney seemingly made a career-high payday from the fight as well.
Devin Haney hits out at inaccurate fight purse reports
Since the fight, Devin Haney has mostly kept a quiet profile owing to the backlash and criticism he has faced in the media. Along with many other fighters and experts, Haney seemingly fell for Ryan Garcia’s promotion and trickery in the lead-up to the fight. Regardless, he was seen celebrating not losing his title with his family and close ones, which further drew a lot of ridicule.
Recently, Haney also responded to a post that Ryan Garcia had shared suggesting that while he made $50 million from the fight, Devin made $35 million. According to prior reports and an interview with Oscar De La Hoya, it was stated that Garcia would stand to make $30 million and double if he won. Similarly, Garcia was also quoted saying, “He should thank me, I just blessed him with about $30 million.”

However, as Devin Haney sees it, the reports are seemingly inaccurate. Taking to his Instagram stories, he wrote, “If you think I made 35..think again. Think bigger b*tch.” As such, it would seem that Haney is adamant of having his worth be portrayed accurately in the media. In the past, reports have suggested his earnings from the Vasiliy Lomachenko fight to be $4 million and $2.8 million and 30% of the PPV shares from the George Kambosos fights.
Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia let their thoughts known about a potential rematch
Immediately after the win, Ryan Garcia, in his post-fight interview claimed that he was open to ‘running it back’ against Devin Haney. Similarly, Haney, whilst admitting that he underestimated Garcia coming into the fight, suggested that he would like the opportunity to have the rematch as well.
“I would love a rematch. I gave him a shot, it’s only right he gives me a shot back. He didn’t make weight so I’m still the champion. We can run it back.”

Notably, ‘The Dream’ also penned a message to the fans and his supporters since the fight and suggested that weight played a massive role in the outcome of the fight. Having missed his days of Ramadan due to preparations, Hanye stated that he would be making up for it, and in the meantime plotting his next move and fight. All things considered, it is tough to see the 25-year-old get an immediate rematch as well.
That said, Ryan Garcia has since come out and suggested that Haney should first fight Rolly Romero, who recently lost to Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, presumably to regain some of his diminished stock. On the other hand, Oscar De La Hoya, who previously stated that the fight would likely result in a trilogy, commented under Devin’s post that there would be no rematch. All things considered, it will be interesting to see how things play out.
