The late Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady were a dominant force on the court. Playing the same position, and getting drafted into the league just a year apart, everyone often drew comparisons between the two. Recently, former Heat guard, Jason Williams shared his perspective about how McGrady would have been the greatest ever in the league, and not-so-surprisingly, it has something to do with Bryant.
In the latest episode of “No Media” on PlayersTV, the former NBA player spoke about various topics from the Mike Bibby Trade to his take on the 1v1 matchup between J-Will and Mike Bibby. Amidst this, he stated, “I always thought to myself if T-Mac – he was so good, that he didn’t have to work like Kobe.” After this, he went on to drop a bombshell claim that McGrady would have been the greatest ever if he had the work ethic of Bryant.
“Is that fair? If T-Mac worked like Kobe, I’m thinking T-Mac might be the greatest ever,” Williams candidly said and the thought likely struck a nerve in fans’ minds. However, it is undeniable that McGrady left an everlasting legacy in the history of the league. He built an impressive resume with prestigious awards and titles including, Hall of Fame Inductee, 1x NBA Most Improved Player, 4x NBA Player of the Month, etc.
Jason Williams believes Tracy McGrady doesn’t get enough respect
Tracy McGrady was drafted as the 9th overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. He had a storied career that lasted for 15 years and he was at his prime during his five-year stint with the Orlando Magic and the Houston Rockets. However, his journey was largely plagued with injuries and he eventually lost his athleticism, had it not happened, his career would have turned out differently.

Furthermore, in the same interview, Jason Williams who played in the NBA from 1998 to 2011 stated that “T-Mac definitely doesn’t get enough respect, in my eyes.” It is disheartening that McGrady who despite injuries played in the league for more than a decade and accomplished things that people can only dream of, and yet he doesn’t have the kind of respect and fan base that he truly deserves.
Kobe Bryant once fooled Tracy McGrady
The debate on who is a better player between Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady has been never-ending. The two shared a strong bond and were great friends off the court. Back in 2019, Bryant and McGrady gave an interview with ESPN and the former Hockets player revealed an interesting story about the time Bryant fooled him by not letting him work out in the off-season.
McGrady told Bryant that he was going to work out, to which, the Lakers star responded by saying “What do you gotta go work out for? You know, offseason, you don’t gotta work out.” Further, he revealed that he looked at him and said okay after which he went to his room to chill for a minute. The unexpected twist came as McGrady said “I go to the weight room, who’s in there? This dude,” while pointing at Bryant.
