UFC weigh-ins often produce some very memorable moments. From Daniel Cormier grabbing the towel at UFC 210, to Charles Oliveira being stripped of his lightweight belt for not making weight ahead of UFC 275, there are many moments that stand out. However, not every moment has serious implications and sometimes it is just plain hilarious. One such moment occurred between Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje.
At UFC 218, Max Hollway fought Jose Aldo in the main event. It was a rematch of their UFC 212 fight, where Holloway became the champion by stopping Aldo in the third round. However, it was not the end as Max had to beat The King of Rio once more to kick off his title reign properly. But, the cut to 145lbs was not easy for Max who needed a towel to make the weight.
He found a helping hand from Justin Gaethje, who was on the same card, taking on Eddie Alvarez. Once Justin saw that the Blessed needed a helping hand, he held one end of the towel. But, it nearly resulted in an embarrassing moment as The Highlight removed the towel for a brief moment, which gave the camera a quick peak at Max’s groin area. Fortunately, Max had his hands in position and saved himself from further embarrassment.
But all was good in the end as both Justin and Max laughed off the incident. While Hollway retained the belt, Gaethje lost to Eddie Alvarez via KO.
Can Max Holloway regain his featherweight title?
Max Hollway is one of the greatest featherweight fighters of all time. In the UFC, he has lost 7 fights and 6 of them were against title holders in the company. However, three of his last losses have come in his last 5 fights and all of those were against Alexander Volknovski. With Volknovski still in the possession of the belt, it is unlikely that Max gets another crack at the gold anytime soon.
However, Holloway is still good enough to beat contenders like Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez. The only person he seems to have trouble beating is the current featherweight title holder, Volkanovski. So what other option does Max have? At the age of 31, a move to lightweight may be a smart move. However, his last foray in the 155lbs division did not go well as Dustin Poirier dominated him for the interim lightweight title at UFC 236.
Ahead of his fight against Arnold Allen, Holloway did reveal that he is contemplating a move to lightweight in the future. However, a lot will depend on how the bout against Arnold goes on April 15 in Kansas City. How do you think Holloway’s career is going to pan out from this particular stage of his life?
