Luka Doncic and his situation with the Dallas Mavericks have NBA fans quite interested. As most of us are aware by now, it appears that the chances of even making the play-in tournament seem all but over for the Mavericks. Despite making several upgrades to the roster, the team has fallen disturbingly short of its goals. Especially considering that this team made the Western Conference Finals last year.
It has become a growing trend for players to demand trades when things are not going their way. Although Luka is yet to do something like that, there is no denying that the decisions made by the Mavericks’ management this season have given him plenty of reasons. Let us take a closer look and analyze what his future could look like in the NBA.
Will Luka Doncic stay with the Dallas Mavericks after falling short this NBA season?
Baby Bird has just finished the first year of his 5 year contract worth $215 million. He has been playing at an exceptional level this season, albeit not a lot of it has translated to wins. Luka has been averaging 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8 assists. However, many of his impressive performances have gone in vain as his team has ended up losing.
Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks management also made some questionable calls. They signed on Christian Wood from the Houston Rockets and believed that he would greatly help their interior defense and be an excellent teammate to Doncic. That never really happened. The Mavs then made a move for Kyrie Irving more than halfway into the NBA season when it became clear that Kyrie was going to be traded from the Nets.
Although Irving and Doncic are expected to be the most talented duo on the court for most games, the fact remains that their team’s defense is also compromised. Especially since Wood has not lived up to expectations. In any case, Cuban knows the team will have to work in order to keep Luka Doncic there long-term.
“He’d like to be here the whole time…But we’ve got to earn that.”
While Luka himself has revealed that the season has been a huge disappointment, he still remains quite optimistic and hopeful about his future with the Mavs. One way or another, whether they sign on Kyrie Irving to a new contract this NBA offseason will play a huge role in determining whether Doncic will be with the Mavs for the long haul
