Aljamain Sterling makes an outrageous claim and reveals he can submit Alexander Volkanovski pretty easily!
Aljo has always been an ambitious fighter. The bantamweight champ has battled through some tough opponents to solidify his position at the top. However, his latest claims have left the fans a little doubtful about his confidence levels.
Previously, Sterling defended his bantamweight title against a wounded TJ Dillashaw. Capping off an 8th successive win, The Funk Master has all but cleared out his division. Barring a potential fight against Henry Cejudo, Sterling could be forced to look upward for a new challenge.
If I rolled with Volk, I 100% think I’d sub him 1-2x. Not saying it’ll be easy anymore. He does his homework, but I believe I’d get him https://t.co/BbBGM45agp

Commenting on Alexander Volkanovski’s recent performance at UFC 284, Sterling believes that he has a good chance against the Aussie. Replying to a comment on Twitter, he says, “If I rolled with Volk, I 100% think I’d sub him 1-2x. Not saying it’ll be easy anymore. He does his homework, but I believe I’d get him”.
For the most part, Aljo’s comments were met with ridicule and a fair bit of trolling. Recently, Alexander Volkanovski put in the performance of a lifetime against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284. Taking the Dagestani to deep waters, the Aussie only lost by a close decision. Moreover, Volkanovski’s performance and Islam’s recent I.V. injection allegations mean that Volk is still the #1 P4P fighter.
Thus, for Sterling to say that he can beat Volkanovski, is a bit of a stretch. As such, fans have also piled on the Jamaican, calling his claims ridiculous and absurd. Although they may be ridiculing the bantamweight champ, Sterling does have the qualities to make a case for himself.
Fans react to Aljamain Sterling saying he can submit Alexander Volkanovski
Over the course of his journey to the top of the bantamweight division, Sterling has made considerable improvements to his all-around game. Collecting 8 submission wins in his MMA career, Sterling has a valid argument that he could maybe get a result against Volkanovski.
However, seeing that Volkanovski was able to hold his own against a bigger and more dangerous fighter in Islam, fans feel that Aljo is in over his head. As such, here are some of the responses to Aljo’s tweet:

To be fair you should think like this. People maybe don't understand how good your subs are as well. I'd give you a very good shot on the floor with him. In a fight though I'm not sure, I would love to see it

Currently, Alexander Volkanovski will be eyeing a return to unify the featherweight title against Yair Rodriguez. In the meantime, Sterling will likely have his hands full with Henry Cejudo, who is set to make his return soon. If not Cejudo, rising star Sean O’Malley might want to get his shot at the title, having beaten former champ Petr Yan at UFC 280.
Thus, should both fighters maintain their positions come the end of the year or the start of next year, maybe it is a possibility the UFC could explore. In case a matchup does materialize, who do you think wins? Will Aljamain Sterling be able to dominate Volkanovski like he thinks he can? Could Volkanovski best Sterling in a fight?
